I wanted to know how popular/useful it is to major in Public Policy. I am specifically talking about the Batten School of Public Policy and Leadership (at UVA), where at undergrad level, you can do 5 years and get a Masters.

I am quite interested in it, but I also like Finance, and love McIntire. I just wanted to know which one do you guys think is more useful. And I'm not too sure about how well know the Batten School is, because its new. Nevertheless, it excites me quite a bit.

Would be great to know a few thoughts, thanks

Finance is more useful, hands down - no discussion.

I did some policy work, it’s a niche.

Every rich kid with a trust fund wants to do policy. Most policy work is reserved for higher level bureaucrats, typically with years of government work in a certain subject (energy policy, trade policy, environmental policy).

However, UVA is a great school for policy, and it would open some doors in the form of internships. Especially if you are getting your masters, which is important in policy work.

What kind of policy do you want to work with? I recommend joining the military (Army/Navy/Air Force) as another Officer after you graduate. You could then work your way into various military policy, and then, you could make a jump into the DIA, State, ect.

It really all depends on what you want to do with your career.
