Public Relations career without PR degree?

After I graduate college, I intend to go into Public Relations (hopefully within the realm of politics). The caveat is that my intended college (King's College NYC) designed their majors around the classical British system and thus has mainly idealistic degrees (mine would be in politics, philosophy, and economics). However, the school is also known for amazing internships around NYC and DC; many students there have interned with the UN, the Walt Disney Company, the White House, etc. and also help with events like New York Fashion Week and various PR/marketing campaigns for major companies.

My question is, can I use TKC's connections to break into the PR world without a hardcore degree?

Hey there,

I am a Senior in college going into PR. To answer your question: yes, definitely. A lot of Universities function similarly to yours and don’t offer a degree specifically in Public Relations. PR credentials can be achieved via a variety of majors, from Communication to Psychology or even a plan like yours, so there’s no need to worry. Just put a lot of energy into obtaining internships in the PR field (even small, unpaid, virtual gigs freshman year) and pay attention to PR trends as that probably won’t be discussed in most of your courses. I hope this helps!

PR has become a truly global business, so if you are willing to consider working overseas you may get into a large PR firm easier and move up faster than in the US. I have friends who interned in China joined top notch firms afterwards. I know from my friend an internship agency called china4future.com offers PR interns in Shanghai and Beijing.
