Will be an international graduate student in Princeton later this year. As I don’t usually drive in my home country, does anyone know whether it’s possible to survive in Princeton for a few years without driving? What is the public transport like there? Thanks /
My son is a junior and has not had a car since he started at Princeton. He finds it easy to get to NYC and doable to get to Philly using public transportation. Getting around Princeton (outside of Nassau St and the campus itself) presents a greater challenge but he has managed to do it without a car for three years. Here’s a link to the public transportation system they have in Princeton. http://www.princetonnj.gov/public-transportation.html
Great, thanks! Encouraging to know someone else also survived without a car for 3 years /
I neglected to congratulate you on your admission to graduate studies in my earlier post - that is wonderful! Enjoy!
- 99% of people live on campus
- NJ Transit (train to NY with connection to Philly etc) comes to campus via dedicated “Dinky” shuttle
- I knew 2 undergrads who had cars during my entire time at Princeton. One was from New Jersey. The other one was a president at an eating club (=run errands?). Freshmen are not allowed to have cars and parking is expensive and extremely limited for those who have them.
- No one drives. No one needs to drive. Everything you want/need is within walking distance or can be delivered to campus. While not a strictly pedestrian campus, given that everyone lives on campus, driving is unheard of.
- There are shuttles used primarily by graduate students who live in far-flung regions of campus.
As a grad student, a car definitely would come in handy for grocery shopping. Other than that, you will be fine.
