This may be crazy, but we're trying to figure out a way for my D to visit Oxy without parental involvement. She will be staying with her brother at USC, and he doesn't have a car. She would need to travel from USC to Oxy Friday mid-day and then get to Burbank airport for an evening flight.

For the trip there: I've used the trip planner on the LA transit site, and she can make the trip via 2 buses or a bus plus a Dash bus. It looks like the shortest trip would drop her in front of the Yosemite Recreation Center but then there doesn't seem to be a way to cut through directly to campus. Other options are to exit the bus at Eagle Rock/Ave 45 or York and Ave 46. Would it be unwise for a young pretty girl to do this alone? I have no clue about the neighborhoods around any of these bus stop options. The bus lines are Metro local lines 83, 84, 181 and the highland park eagle rock Dash bus, in case anyone has opinions about buses to avoid.

From Oxy to the airport, I'm assuming we can line up a shuttle. Any recommendations going to Burbank?

Also, if anyone has suggestions of places to go on campus to see what life is really like there (on a Friday afternoon), we'd love to hear them. She'll have some time to kill, and wouldn't mind watching sports practices or seeing whatever students are up to. Thanks a bunch!

Not too sure about the transportation: perhaps a taxi? I don't know. But yeah, LA's bus system is pretty good -- during the day there shouldn't be any problems. I would imagine you could call a shuttle to the airport after.

"Time to kill" ... well, there is always something going on. I feel that it might be a bit more official if your daughter got a tour though? In any case, she will probably have fun wandering around. It's always more helpful if you know someone to escort you though.

Thanks for the replies! "Time to kill" is after the tour/info session, but before the shuttle to the airport, so just wondering if there's anything cool that she wouldn't be likely to see on the tour, but would help her get a sense of the campus culture.

I get the impression that Oxy students probably don't ride the bus much, but if there's anyone who has impressions about those specific bus routes or locations, it would be great to hear. I mainly want to avoid putting her on a bus that goes through a horrible neighborhood. It's one thing to ride through a bad neighborhood if you know what's coming next, but it can be kind of scary if you don't know what comes next.

fauxnom, the business area around Oxy isn't great but the neighborhood immediately surrounding campus is much better. A bus to either of these locations would be fine and put her within easy walking distance of the school. I wouldn't, however, have her do the bus drop-off at night.....daytime hours will be fine. I see that you are from the Pacific Northwest, can she find any kids from her area that are currently Oxy students? Seems like so many of my son's friends are from your area. Just a thought....

The Burbank airport is easy to get to from Oxy ... my son has taken a cab from the airport to campus in the past and it was under $25.

Thanks for the help on my post. It turned out, happily, that my D was able to catch rides with classmates who were also visiting Oxy, so the bus ride will have to wait for another day.
