Public transportation in Buffalo is adequate for most student needs. It is possible for you to get around on the using the bus and the rail (subway/trolley). There is a public bus and subway terminal on South campus where the rail and several buses pick up/drop off passengers. If you already know your destination beforehand, you can use the trip planner on the NFTA’s(Buffalo’s Public transportation company) website to find out which vehicles to take and where/when to take them. ([NFTA - Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority](http://www.nfta.com)).

UB also has buses that travel between campuses seven days days per week, and buses that travel to the mall and grocery stores twice per week, although there is a supermarket, Tops, right across Main street from the South campus dorms, and another grocery store, Aldi, one subway stop away on Main Street.

As for parking, all students/ faculty/ staff wishing to park their vehicles on either campus, must register for a parking permit for their status at UB. Parking permits cost at least $100 and are valid for the entire academic (fall, spring, and summer) year.

There are rules for parking as lots are designated for faculty/staff and students. One of these rules, is first year students cannot park on any lot on the North Campus Academic Spine (the buildings where most classes are held, 4 libraries, and the Student Union are located). Freshman parking tags are bright pink because of this rule. People who park their vehicles in the wrong lot can receive parking tickets with fines. Non-payment of fines can result in registration checkstops( not being allowed to register for classes), or not being able to receive your diploma if you graduate.
My kid got a free parking pass as a freshman this year. Parking for freshman is restricted to certain lots though. He didn’t really need a car, except for driving back to school between Thanksgiving/Christmas and one trip to WalMart for necessities (hah).
