I know threads have been posted about public transportation before, but I couldn't find very up to date information about this. I know that LA has city busses that go most places but take awhile to get there, and that many students suggest having a car, but when I was visiting for Explore, I think the tour guide mentioned that a train/metro station was being installed right next to campus. Does anybody have info on this or know when it will be opened or how useful it will be?

The USC campus will be served by two Metro stations. The station called “USC/Exposition” will be at the southeast corner of the campus at Exposition and Figueroa. The other one, at the southwest corner, will be at Vermont and Exposition. This is the “Expo Line” of the LA Metro system. I believe it is set to open summer, 2010.
The good public transportation tool for USC available right now is the Dash Bus, route F. It goes fast and cheap to lots of cool places downtown.

Regular city buses are not that useful, unless you just happen to be going a short distance to somewhere on their route. Otherwise they are agonizingly slow. There are some Express Routes, but they are slow too. Regular buses are good for people with lots of time and no other options.
