I'm not really keen on the idea of bringing a car to college with me, especially with LA traffic and all (if I end up going to USC). So, are there any actually good forms of transportation for students? I hear ZipCar isn't too great. Are they really building a subway type of transportation for students to get to LA? Any info would be appreciated. :)

^^ will be completed summer 2010. Subway stops on 3 out of 4 corners of campus.

USC provides transportation to LA live.

I will be amazed if they finish the expo line on time, but that said, they’ll probably finish it relatively soon, so it would be around for most of your undergrad.

The expo line will run from culver city, straight past USC, up to Staples Center and LA Live, and then to downtown proper.

Also, it is an at-grade (ground level) train, it only goes below ground to get past figueroa.

@Jbusc - I’ve been trying to follow the construction progress but there isn’t much info on it at their website. Do you know of any up to date sites tracking the progress and estimated finish date other than their broad summer 2010 suggestion?

not really, my opinion is just based on watching them build the thing :)

Watching them not build the thing you mean. I remember very little to no progress being made all of last year. Recently though things have been picking up.

The word I heard was that from downtown to the USC stops will be done on time, but onward from USC to Culver City will be delayed.

There are plenty of buses near USC. Also, Zip Car is an excellent resource for occasional driving.

@dt123 - Think they’ll start running trains before the full line to culver city is finished? I think that would be a deciding factor in whether I, and many other students live close to campus or somewhere cheaper closer to downtown.

They’ll probably start running the trains before the full line is done. It makes sense, anyways.

Hint – they hide information about things like this in newspapers.

Thanks! That’s exactly what I was looking for. Sounds like it is more safe to plan on it not being open by start of fall 2010 semester then as far as housing goes.

so overall would you guys say it is (or will be) very easy for kids who don’t have cars to go into LA?

also someone said there are plenty of buses near usc too, so is that another easy and popular way to go about getting to LA?

By reputation, LA is a car town. It is easier to get around if you have a car at USC. However, there are buses available so you can commute outside USC if you don’t own a car.
