Sort of cheating I guess; this is for soccer camp. I did a search and found a thread about Amtrak from the Bay Area, but on further research, it’s actually an Amtrak BUS for most of the trip from Davis/Fairfield-Suisun. You take the train tho San Jose, then switch to a bus for the last 4 hours. Anybody tried this?

My son and other Cal Poly students I know often take the Amtrak bus from SLO to San Jose. It ends at the SJ Amtrak/Caltrain station.

Can your son take the Capitol Corridor train from Davis to SJ and then transfer to the bus? Should be pretty straightforward, although long :)

That’s the plan for now! The Amtrak site says you can’t start at San Jose, that “by law, part of the trip has to be on a train” (I’m guessing Greyhound had something to do with this. Greyhound takes eight hours.). Does that seem true?

You can’t buy a ticket for a bus-only segment on the Amtrak site due to the “part of the trip has to be on a train” rule. But tickets for bus-only segments can be purchased at the stations. What people often do is start or end their trip at the train station after SJ (I think it’s in Fremont) and just get on or off at SJ; the cost is the same even if you don’t use that short Fremont-SJ segment.

Can they be purchased at ANY station? Any station other the San Jose, perhaps?

I think so, but can confirm with DS when he gets home from work. He’s done both - purchased tickets at the SLO train station, and purchased tickets online for the ride from SLO to Fremont, getting off the bus at SJ.

Thanks!..

Order your round trip ticket online, print out the confirmation, then go to the Davis Amtrak station kiosk and print out your tickets. Or purchase your round trip ticket at the Davis station.

Take the Capitol Corridor train from Davis to San Jose. Then ride the Amtrak bus from San Jose to either SLO or Cal Poly. Its better to buy a round trip ticket from Davis because the seats on the bus are reserved (vs unlimited seating on the train). If you prefer to get one way tickets to head back to Davis, you can purchase tickets in the SLO downtown station but not at the Cal Poly bus stop. If you cant get tickets for the bus segment because it is full, take the San Joaquin.

Thank you! So the tickets some time sellout? Hope that’s unlikely on a Sunday in July. We are not sure if they will be picked up by a parent.

On occasion, the bus may fill up because there are only so many seats on a bus. Perhaps this month there will be plenty of seats available because there are fewer (Santa Barbara & Cal Poly) students around?

Son just finished the trip! Thanks all.
