public university to top med school?

I am probably going to have to attend a public school for undergrad, such as University of Florida. If i do really well, and participate in the honors program and stuff, will I still have a chance at getting into a top med school like duke?

...i would think......you'll need to work hard regardless of where you go for undergrad if you're going the premed route

You should check in the archives for a lengthy discussion on this topic.
The general consensus is that if you get good grades in your undergrad program, where you went is generally not hugely important.

As long as it's an accredited school.

Don't guess. Go look. Find the med school(s) you wish to attend. Look where their students are from. Adjust for regional bias if necessary. Voila'. If you see Harvard,Yale Stanford, Princeton repeated over and over with a Swarthmore and Williams thrown in every third time and don't see a state school , you are probably out of luck.

My personal opinion is that a graduate of the University of Florida's Honors program , with an appropriate MCAT that ranks with other accepted students at your med school of choice, would be in good shape. I would NOT feel the same about someone's chance at a top 10 med school if they were from The University of Northern Arkansas-Petticoat Junction Campus.

lol funny you would choose to mention Arkansas because I live there :D

but really...I don't recommend any of our schools, I recommend pretty much any other school in any other state though

Hendrix, in Arkansas, puts a comparatively large percentage of grads into med school, over 10 % according to published numbers in the online guides, if they are to be believed. It sounds like a great LAC, and the campus is attractive. What's your take ?

i've heard #'s are so important, that where you went has little if any basis in their decision on your admittance

St. Marys in maryland is great. they have a 90% acceptance rate for med school. Last year 3 students got into harvard med and 1 to john hopkins.

my take is you stay out of this craphole...

glas989. Specific. Efficient. Direct. Not that enlightening, though. (I hope you find what you are looking for.)

lol, do you live here yourself?

Nope, in your big neighbor to the West. D doesn't want to go to school in-state and mom doesn't want her to be more than a day's drive away. So we've looked at everything close , if 7.5 hours away can be considered that close. Do you have any friends who go to Hendrix who might have a different view of the craphole?

nah, and just to elaborate I wasn't speaking of the school, I was speaking as a whole. It's just my view of living here...terrible place to live.

I just looked more at Hendrix and it's a religiously affiliated school and I don't know how religious you guys are but this school is in Arkansas and if something is religiously affiliated then it's gonna be pretty religious.. and the school is in Conway, hear it's a pretty crappy place.

i don't know if your daughter's heart is set on this school but if it is, then i dun want to be a bother. but if it's not set on it then i urge you not to come to Arkansas...she'll just be miserable, especially coming from Texas(btw why don't she wanna go to a Texas school(like Rice)?? i'm sure they are a helluva lot better than ours, heck nearly any school is...)

Curmudgon, my DD is looking at Hendrix as well. Although it is a Methodist-affiliated school and in the Bible belt, it is an amazingly accepting place. Not at all conservative (a definite plus for us, though it may not be for you). Academics are great. Class size is very small. There are numerous clubs and organizations, but no Greek system (a plus for DD, but I thought I would mention it since SMU in your state is Methodist, but a very different kind of place from Hendrix). I would recommend a campus visit to see if it is a good fit. DD did an overnight stay with a current student. She had a great visit.

My DH is a Hendrix grad. After graduating in the late 70's, he was on campus this spring for a campus visit with DD. He ran into an old prof, who not only remembered his name, but remembered his grades in one of the courses he'd taken from him. Another prof remembered him from being a student, but had never taught him. Don't listen to glas989, he obviously has no personal knowledge of Hendrix. DD's Calculus teacher is a Hendrix grad whose children have also graduated there. One is now in grad school at MIT in some advanced Math program, the other just started Dental school.

Conway is a growing city very near Little Rock. Plenty of eating, shopping right in Conway, and near enough to Little Rock for more to do. Hendrix is not the only college in Conway (but is the only one we would consider), University of Central Arkansas is there as well as another small Baptist-affiliated school.

Scootron,D and I have already done a stealth visit at Hendrix . It is certainly NOT as described by my Arkansas friend. Where else have you and your D looked?

i hear that Knox college sends about 97% of its students (who applied to med school) to med school...that is VERY amazing!

Curmudgon,
She's thought about Rice, but I really don't like Houston. She's looked at SMU, but that's not really a fit for her. Rhodes is another school she's looked at, but she doesn't like it as much as Hendrix. U of Arkansas offered full ride; she doesn't want to go to a school that big (not like UT, but big for Arkansas). OU (OK) offered close to full ride if she's National Merit Finalist. Ouachita Baptist University (near our hometown) offered her full ride plus $1K per year stipend just for Semifinalist, but again, she is more the LAC type. She'll probably go to Hendrix, but wants the full ride. If she's National Merit Finalist, Hendrix will be fully paid for with a combination of scholarships from the Arkansas State Dept of Higher Ed (incentives to keep brightest grads in the state--even payable for students attending private schools in the state) and through various Hendrix merit scholarships. Her goal is to have undergrad paid for without loans or mom and dad's $$, then go to med school. The National Merit Finalist would make the first part a reality.

Three more schools to look at for your D. Look at Austin College, Southwestern University,Trinity University, and the U of Tulsa. O.K. that's four. Huh. When I started typing it was three. LOL. Based on what I am hearing, really look at Austin College.

D really wants to head more north (but she's just a junior). Today the mail brought more Earlham, CSB-SJU (in Minnesota!!!), and a couple more. We are in the same boat with D needing to get as much of undergrad paid as possible but I doubt she will be looking at choosing between full-rides at schools she would love to attend! Congrats to your D.
