Public vs Private

<p>Which is actually harder to get into? not counting the money or the athletics.</p>

<p>Depends on the school. I would say that the hardest schools to get into are almost all private.</p>

<p>All of the 25 most selective schools on this list are private.
I count only 9 on the entire list that are public.</p>

<p>That said, many public universities have become increasingly selective in recent years. Selective private schools tend to take a “holistic” approach to admissions; state schools tend to be more numbers-driven. Therefore, students who do not quite meet GPA, rank, or score cut-offs for certain public universities may have a better shot at some very selective private schools.</p>

<p>Beyond the top 50, there’s no correlation between governance and selectivity. There are many publics and privates that are virtually open admission.</p>
