publication??

I am interested in a creative writing major, but have not been published outside my school's literary magazine...
I am a high school junior.
Does anyone know of any contests or publications that are especially receptive to new or young writers.
Thanks for any input I can get on this matter...

You can look for all sorts of writing contests/scholarships that are open to new (and young) writers just by going on a search engine.

Not sure if it would help all that much for 'creative writing,' but if you're a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, you can publish stuff in their monthly updates or quarterly publications.

Also, look for publications (webzine or in-print) that focus on your passions and try to submit something there.

oh...
I was afraid that the National Society of High School Scholars was a scam, so I never sent back their application form... oops...

If you go to the writing section of a bookstore or library, you'll find a book called Writer's Market (or Novel and Short Story Writer's Market); they have a section about markets for young writers. They put one out every year, so get one that's as recent as possible.

hey, I have a general question; I don't know how applicable it is to CC, but:
I gave a poem to poetry.com and they sent me a letter with the gist of: you are a semifinalist for our 'international open poetry contest'. We want to publish your poem. And you should buy the book where we publish all these poems.
So what's the verdict? scam or no?

poetry.com is a scam. sorry. You should look at:
-Teen Ink (publishes teen stories, essays, movie reviews, etc)
-Scholastic Writing Awards
-NFAA writing awards (<a href="http://www.artsawards.org%5B/url%5D">www.artsawards.org</a>)</p>

Even if you don't have much experience/publishing, it shouldn't matter. Most colleges don't require any additional materials to apply for a creative writing degree. If you get in the university you'll get in the degree (or if its not automatic you apply after 2 years to the degree so you'll have plenty of time to decide!) Good luck!
