publication

Is it true that you HAVE to get published (for science research) to get into med school?

No, not a requirement. Not even if you are applying to MD/PhD, but it does help.

What? Of course not. You don't even HAVE to do reseach.

Does it help a lot in getting into medical school though if your work is published?

... a research-oriented medical school will care if your research was successful, and one of the ways they measure success is in publications.

If you're going for M.D. alone or even M.D./Ph.D. you don't NEED publications to get in, but they definitely help

What weight is given to non-scientific publications in, say, a poetry or literary magazine of standing for med school admissions?

Not much. It's a talent/good EC but that's about it. Med schools value scientific publications because it shows you have an aptitude for science and bench research and therefore might make a contribution to the med school in that area.

Again, for a research-oriented medical school? Less. But it's an accomplishment.

And getting a publication is hard enough for a graduate student to accomplish. It's much more difficult for an undergrad to get one, and it takes a long time...

I could be wrong, but I doubt a significant number of med school applicants (or even acceptees) have publications.

This was all told to me by my research mentor
