<p>Author income could be taxable depending on where you live. You would need to consult with the publishing house to find out where they need to pay you - the US or your home country. Several options might be available.</p>
<p>Income from publishing a book is not the same category as income from a job (at least in the US) so it is likely that you could earn money this way without conflicting with the work restrictions of an F-1 visa. Again, the legal staff at the publishing house should be able to advise you.</p>
