This anxious Mom desperately in need of a new voice in my head:( D2 is Pacific Northwest raised. Will she "fit in" at Rochester? Somebody please spell out how to decide which of these great schools!!?? Who has most contact with professors? Where is the best social life?Looking for a balance. Scholarships came in exactly the same, money not an issue, D2 will thank her Dad for that.I know, different schools, different places. I am open to any and all thoughts! Thanks.

The weather in Rochester is more similar to Alaska. She'll fit right in.

U Rochester is a more selective and superior academically.
Puget Sound is closer to home.
What will her major be?

I visited Rochester and I liked the campus and the people whom I met there. If you want to see if she fits in, then send her for an overnight there. Jet blue flies cheap!

Rochester is attractive because she's a musician interested in science. She's an athletic, outdoor kid who loves to camp and kayak.Different water in NY. Major is TOTALLY undecided at this point. I have the disadvantage of not seeing the campus or the city, her Dad did the East coast tour, I went West. She did overnight at UR and liked what she saw. We like that UR is "out of her box". Really like the diversity at UR. Weather in Rochester is more severe than Ak, LOL, she won't have a problem with that.Being close to home has never been a factor, my girls seem to love to fly. (D1 is in Boston) I have been concerned so many kids at UPS have cars, is campus life fractured because kids are leaving ?, but I don't have any evidence of this, just a Mom perception. UPS is half the size, 60/40 women. My concern is relationships with professors. Because UR is a full research university, do the profs have time for undergrads? Is UR ultra competetive academically, will there be balance? My head knows this experience will be what she makes of it.

Rochester's curriculum is also really open (think brown) so that leaves a lot of exploration an options open to the user. All the Profs will hold office hours, and remember that there will always be TA's and other help availiable in the department if needed.

I am a Rochester native. I know a lot of students from local high schools who attend U of Rochester. They are some of the best students from the area...really nice, talented kids. But, U of R has a national student body. Students come from all over the US and world. U of R is known for its strength in the sciences.

I would not say U of Rochester is a warm, fuzzy place like a Christian LAC but it has mostly serious students, many with professional aspirations, and a faculty of serious, hard-working scholars. I have family members some who are retired professors and some are graduates of U Rochester. The faculty are in their offices a lot and their doors are open. Sometimes they get a little lonely because students don't visit LOL.

The city of Rochester and the surrounding area...there won't be enough time to enjoy the cultural and scenic amenities that the area offers. Great camping and kayaking in the Adirondack Mts (we call them "mountains") 5-6 hours away and an active Rochester chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club. Sailing on Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes. Skiing and skating. U Rochester has a crew team and co-sponsors a prominent crew competition each year on the Genesee River which runs through the U Rochester campus.

For music, can't beat the Eastman and Hochstein music school performances and the Rochester Philharmonic.

Don't know much about U Puget Sound except that it is an LAC...different from a university like U of R.

I live near UPS. Go to Rochester - all-around better school, and for a musician interested in science, not even lose. I know quite a few of the music faculty at UPS, fine folks, but not of Rochester's caliber.

Thanks Everybody! You info helps confirm decision to go to UR. I know she'll be great.

NO!!!! go to Puget Sound!!!

Jenny, no offense! I know you really want to get off of the waitlist, but the OP needs a honest and objective answer, so I'd say URochester for the same reason (superior academics)! :)
