All right, I am not known as a very orthodox person (in some respects), rather one who thinks outside the box. So I have been thinking lately that MT CC has gotten a bit boring, and I have chatted with a few MT CC regulars who also think so. As much as I appreciate this "new" format, it really has become segmented, reasonably so for such diverse topics. However, I do miss the good old thread that everyone could go to and just randomly post and converse about all topics in general (mostly MT of course). So I am taking the initiative and starting yet another new thread. I have my fingers crossed that we can keep this at the top of the forum with regular postings. My objective for doing this is to keep us oldies interested and coming back to the forum. After all there is much to learn from one another.

Just about two months have passed now...haven't heard much about new Freshmen and their experiences at their schools. Care to share?

I can say that my two sophomores just finished crew work for the St. Louis Rep's production of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". Very demanding...5-6 weeks with at least 7 shows per week, but they loved every minute. Tomorrow they begin rehearsals for "Bye Bye Birdie".

Got a phone call from them this morning...tonight they are taking a road trip to Bloomington-Normal to see Illinois Wesleyan's production of "Urinetown". Guess there is talk that Webster may do that next year...nothing concrete, just scuttlebut for now.

I'd love to see the Urinetown production because my D's school did an adaptation of it and she was Little Sally. University of Oklahoma is doing Urinetown this month. Their audition is on Oct. 24, but unfortunately, that's a Monday and there's no show Sunday night or Monday (though there is a Sunday matinee). I think the audition might be on a Monday because their Homecoming is October 22. I guess the schools must have just gotten the rights to the show since there's such a flurry of interest in it!

I love the part of Little Sally...and I can so picture your d in that role. We saw the show on Broadway a few years back and loved it. So original.

The OU audition is actually October 22, Saturday.

Their website is having a problem updating. The date on there now was last years audition date.

My student, Scarlett from NOCCA, is auditioning on Oct. 22 and OU is giving her a comp to see Urinetown Friday night.
It has been directed by Jeff McCarthy, Drama Desk winner from the original production.

If any of you all are going to be at OU please look for Scarlett. I have posted her picture on the thread called "Posting Pictures"

Anyone else out there auditioning on October 22?

Does this not seem right to anyone else?? I auditioned for a play, and I didn't get a part at all (Part A) , but they had to move
the girl from Part A to another part (Part B), so instead of getting me to play Part A, (I was the only other person that auditioned for that part) they got a girl that didn't even audition, and doesn't want to be in the play. So is this not really really screwed up or is it just me?? Does anyone think I have the right to be mad??? Because I am. And the worst part is, that my Dad is in the play, and I have to go see him in it, and hear him talk about it.

Well, Scarlett might be auditioning Oct.22, but my d's audition is Oct. 24. I am looking at the letter they sent her. The letter says that Homecoming is Oct. 22. They are offering comp tickets for the Friday, Saturday, or Sunday shows, but my D's flight won't get in in time on Sunday.

Hehe. When I first read your post, Mary Anna, I had a moment of panic since I had to make arrangements for someone else to go with my D from southern California. If the audition were on the 22nd, that might be a problem since the hotel is NOT for the 22nd! That's why I looked it up! I showed my d Scarlett's photo, so she can look for her there. My d was really disappointed she can't go to Urinetown, but with the time change involved and the flight options, she can't get there in time for the matinee. Tell Scarlett if she wants to correspond with my d ahead of time, she can email her through my email on CC.

Perhaps you need to address your issues to the casting director. Could it be a physicality issue as to why you weren't asked to fill the part? Age? Height? I think if you approach the director with the attitude of genuinely wondering from a constructive viewpoint why you were passed over...and do it in a professional manner, he/she will enlighten you on their thinking.

I understand your initial feeling of anger, but step back and gain some perspective on all of this. My Ss have been turned down for roles in the past also...many times it was because they didn't fit the part...other times they discovered they needed to work on their techniques. If it was the latter of those they always used it as fire beneath them and worked their butts off to improve for the next time. I truly believe it is that ember that has gotten them to where they are today....and I would suspect that little fire will always be held to their feet as that is just their nature.

I guess what I am saying is...find out the exact reason why you were overlooked for the part before reacting. Then be pro-active. I hope this helps. Good luck!!

Hi - I already shared a little bit about my d's experience at NYU. She's loving it there. I may have emailed this info to someone else on this forum, but don't think I wrote it on a thread. Something interesting: her voice teacher was in a concert with Sutton Foster, Liz Calloway, and others (those 2 are my d's absolute favorites, though) and told her class if they gave out programs, they could see it for free ($150 tickets, or something like that!)My d said, "I can't; I have a class that night (Writing the Essay)!" Her teacher said "Don't be a dork; skip class!" But she didn't. Turned out her class just showed film strips of a museum that she had already visited - ugh! Gotta be proud of her, though; dishing out a lot of $ for her education and she's got her priorities straight. (COme to think of it, how do I know she's not putting one over on me? ha ha.)
She said the Writing the Essay class isn't as bad as everyone says. I'd love to hear of others experiences - not just NYU, but anyone who's a freshman MT or theater major!!! You're right, 5pants, the threads have become a little boring; I'm with you!

Well the director quit, so we found a new director, so I can't really ask the old one why I was turned down, but now the girl playing it is rubbing it in my face.

rossji,
glad to hear your daughter is loving NYU. My S is in his 2nd year--still loving it. But getting little sleep. He's in Playwrights. Is stage-managing a show for a 3rd year Director's play. And, is taking the Directing/Acting tracks in his studio as well as taking available design classes. He auditioned for a Spr. Mainstage musical that only had 8 characters (4 m, 4f). Didn't get cast, but did make callbacks. I thought that was encouraging. He didn't really mind Writing the Essay, either. This year he has begun taking courses for a minor. Can't wait to see him. Will you be visiting for Parents' Day? If so, enjoy.

Hi! I heard Playwrights is awesome. For your son to be called back for a MUSICAL, when he's not in CAP, is incredible!! What's his minor? Directing? That's one of the reasons I liked NYU; there is always that possibility of minoring or double majoring (although the latter is nearly impossible, I know!)
It doesn't sound like you're going to Parents Day - is it just for Freshmen? Yes, I'm going, as we only live 1 hr 45 minutes away. We got $36 tix to see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (a small advantage for paying the enormous tuition, lol!)
Glad your son is still enjoying it; maybe our paths will cross at some point!

Oh..you will just love Dirty Rotten Scoundrels! I saw it this summer once with my d and then went back with my son because I knew he would love it. Norbert Leo Butz is so fantastic! He truly earned that Tony! $36 tickets are definitely a plus too! Have a great time!

I have to be honest with you....I realize how much it hurts, but that attitude of yours wouldn't last 2 seconds in this household of mine. To be blunt, if you want to make a go of it in this business you are going to have to toughen A LOT MORE and realize that there will be many more disappointments ahead and if you work really hard many wonderful moments will out weigh the bad ones. You need to get on and begin looking at future projects and don't wallow in the "unfairness" you feel as though you have been dealt.

If I have offended you I apologize, but you do need to be professional about this....whether it is community theatre, school theatre, etc....it is always always valuable to show dignity.

Theaterbrat--What 5pants says is so true. It's more true in the arts than anywhere. Remember to look at the balance of life. Think of the good things, too. Weren't you Liat in your community theater production of South Pacific? Do you suppose somebody else also would have loved that role? But you got it. Did you enjoy it?

I'm not real clear on your goals, I guess, because I thought you wanted a career in wigs and makeup design. Are you also an actor, singer, and dancer? Do you train in those areas? Think about what you really want and then be realistic about how to go about accomplishing your goals.

Theaterbrat- they're right. This is the toughest buisness in the world- if youd don't have a thick skin, your screwed. May I mention one of the biggest things that is giving me hopes.

I am a senior at a high school in a suburb of NY.
A girl with the initals IM went to the same school.
I have never gotten a single role in my high school, but out of school I have.
IM had the same issues.
I hate my school because of its cliquiness, favoritism, and unfairness.
So did IM.
I made All-State choir over some of the people who get roles all the time.
So did IM.
IM got into her top choice school- Cap21 at NYU Tisch.
IM landed a role on brodway.
And another.
And another.
The first role was Maureen in the OC of Rent.
The second was Amneires in Aida.
The third was Elphaba in the OC of Wicked.

IM is Idina Menzel.

Anything can happen- dont let one, or two, or three denials get you down!
