Purchasing a Bike in Ithaca

So I've pretty much decided that I want to get a bike once in Ithaca. Mainly because I prepared my schedule with no thoughts whatsoever to the locations of my classes and now I am in need for fast transport. I also think I'd rather bike it than bus it. Could use the fresh air and exercise, at least before it gets chilly.

So where can I get one from and what price range can I hope for? Will I have to purchase a helmet, lock separately? What kind of bike should I get and what's the lowest I can get it at?

Thanks for any inputs.

you can try a google search for any cycle shops in ithaca, but those places will be a bit pricier

target has awesome college bikes (like the schwinn kind) for 200+.

the bus; it takes you everywhere on the campus right? does it also take you to the Commons and the mall?

buses take you all around tompkins county. will take a while to go to farther places though like wegmans. commons and mall are close by bus

i disagree with feral24. there are state parks in tompkins county that are difficult to get to.

Well I already said I’d prefer biking to busing.

So is Target the best option, with the cheap college bikes?

Why not buy used from craigslist?

there might be some at the dump and run during frosh orientation

I second the vote to buy a used one (Craig’s list, a local bike shop, etc) … and then sell it back at the end of the year (back in my day you could sell a used bike for about 50% of what you paid for it) … it will end up being a cheap 9 month rental.
