This helicopter mom wants to know if anyone has received their invite to compete for Purdue Beering Scholarship. I know a couple years ago the kids recieved them on 12/23. My s scores were borderline - so we are hoping and praying as Purdue is #1 choice.

Last year this was offered to a student from my school who had SAT 2400, ACT 36 - both as a junior plus AP National Scholar AND State AP Scholar as a junior. She was #2 in her class and had competed in the Siemen’s Science Research competition. Needless to say, Purdue was not at the top of her list, despite the generous offer. She went off to MIT very happily. Just saying that the Beering Scholarship takes 1 in a million stats…

Yes they told us he would be borderline with 36 on his ACT 1st in class with varsity sports and Eagle scout. They also told us about the girl who turned it down to go to MIT - they actually had 2 turn it down last year. Still holding out hope!

I bet he’d get a full ride at Wabash. They’ve just announced a 5 year Masters in Engineering program with Purdue so you might be able to get that. I’ve never heard of any other scholarships that included a Masters and Medical degree or PHD but then again a highly capable student might not want to spend that many years at one school and would probably get offers many places. Good luck to your son!

Friend of S received Beering Scholarship this year. He was an alternate and picked up one of the slots that were turned down. Similar stats, 36 ACT, valedictorian, Eagle Scout, varsity track, etc. UIUC offered $1500. He happily went out of state. The students that compete for the Beering have many options, so it is not unheard of to have awardees turn it down for other schools. Good luck to your son.

So does anyone know if someone receives the beering and turns it down does it go to someone else or is it just not awarded?

According to post #5, alterates are given the awards.

Purdue rep told us that if they turn it down in time - as in prior to May 1st that they will award it alternates. If it is turned down last minute it will not be awarded.

Anyone know when they recieved the invites last year? I applied this year and I am hoping for Beering invite.

Received the invite couple of weeks back.

last year, or for this years Beering?

Received the invite December 2011 for 2012-2013 academic year

I saw the subject line & thought this referred to fraternity boys.

Is there a specific cutoff each year to be invited? I was surprised my son did not receive an invite with an ACT of 35 which superscored to a 36, 4.0, valedictorian of large school, 12 APs, lots of leadership and community service.
