I have been recently admitted to both Purdue CHE and GWU SEAS as a transfer for fall 2010. I am having trouble deciding between them because though Purdue Engineering is more known and highly ranked than GWU I want to study Biomedical Engineering not CHE.

I am looking for some advice on which program to enter to give me the best chance to do graduate study in biomedical engineering at a great grad school. Thanks!

<— not a biomedical engineering expert…

But I would recommend doing some research into the amount of research funding they each apply to biomedical engineering. I know GWU has a lot of information on their funding priorities on their website.

Also - look at the sort of research they are currently doing, to see if biomedical has a strong presence.

Graduate school admission is often about how many opportunities YOU sought out for experience, and often that experience is in research and application. Go with the one that gives you the most opportunities to reach out and excel. A person can go to a great school known for engineering, and then there will be so much competition for research funding that they’ll be overseen. Then they will have a degree from a great school, but not much to put on their personal resume to stand out to the graduate admissions committee.

Just my thoughts…

Hi I am currently a student at Purdue and I must say their biomedical engineering major (although relatively new) is very very prestigious. Purdue is already a very good school for any engineering but the biomed/engin admissions is very selective… they only admit 200 people per year into that major and they have very good faculty to back the cream of the top students admitted into that major…

DO NOT GO TO GWU SEAS! so i started out there as a freshman and in the biomed eng program. then i switched to chemistry but now im transferring to a different school…

it sucks, the labs are non existent. there is one main engineering building and it is falling apart. they keep talking about a new science center but they havent even started. it wont be built for another 10 years probably.

there are no good opportunities for science/engineering students because the school is overrun with poli sci and international affairs majors

the biomed program is all electrical (not chemical) which to me is pretty boring

don’t go there

i seriously cannot warn you enough. its a waste of money at GW if you aren’t a poli sci or international affairs major. purdue is an amazing school that is known for engineering so definitely definitely go there. even if they dont have biomed engineering or whatever you’re looking for specifically, im sure you can wiggle with the curriculum.

oh and they laid off a lot of their older professors that weren’t good anymore. but they probably hired younger professors that aren’t good at all and have little experience.

purdue also has a lot of opportunities for engineers… constant job fairs, EPICS program (which is engineering at purdue in community service where you use your engineering skills and collaborate with a team and a company/partner to do a community service orientated project i.e. building an outdoor solar system or organizing the recycling program/methods at a nearby high school), 5 or 6 engin buildings, world recognized faculty, opportunities to be a TA or research assistant (research with discovery park i.e. cancer research etc)
