Purdue Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

This is the official thread for those applying EA to Purdue University.

List your unweighted GPA, any SAT /ACT scores, and ECs. What majors are you going into?
Ask your questions, the CC community is here to help!

My daughter just submitted her Common App, so now we wait. She will be a business major, and here are her stats: OOS, GPA 4.3W/3.98UW, SAT 1480, 7APs.

Does anyone have any insight as to whether putting a second choice (like Physics) after FYE reduces chances of acceptance into FYE?

I do not believe it will harm the application but I can’t speak from first hand experience. My D refused to put down a second choice major. She said if she didn’t get into CoE she’d go somewhere else. It’s difficult to transfer into engineering from a different major and major was more important to her than the school itself.

Thanks!

Same here. ALL IN CoE or nothing.

Our S28 is very competitive and most likely will get in EA with an OOS Merit Trustees Scholarship. However, the link below is quite a “concern” and NOT good. Needing a 3.86 GPA (Purdue website avg) or better in first year engineering “just to get your major” in Mech Engineering is a NON-starter for us. Also, the class sizes for Mech Engineering are the largest for “good engineering” schools. Purdue even talks about the overcorowding on the same below link. S28 has ranked other engineering schools applied too higher than Purdue based on these “issues”. Also, look at mental health issues in such a competive cut-throat NOT “colaborative” environment like other engineering schools.
We want our S28 to go to “college” not school. Our S28 does NOT eat, drink, or sleep engineering. He is a “typical teen” not a machine.
Not Purdue bashing here but Applicants and Parents do your full “deep dive”

Where are you seeing that? The transition to major site GPA continues to say 3.2 GPA and that 96.7% of students last year received their first choice major.

Transition to major was a painless, seamless process for my D and nearly everyone she knew (with the exception of BMEs).

And Purdue is super collaborative. Not sure where you hearing or seeing that it is super competitive or cut throat. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I am speaking “specifically” about Mech Engineering. According to Engineering Admissions - WE Emailed - For Fall 2022 Average GPA for Entering Mech Engineering Sophomores was 3.86

From the Website -

For a few of our engineering majors that are at or above enrollment capacity, admission may be competitive and will be evaluated based on GPA, Engineering Admissions Index (EAI), and other factors.*

*Currently, majors that are near or above capacity limitations are Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Multidisciplinary Engineering.

RED FLAGS - “Competitive” NOT Collaborative “Above Capacity”, “Other Factors”

We have now limited our Engineering Schools to Freshman “DIRECT ADMIT” Programs into Major of Choice, which in our case is Mech Engineering.

Here is some more

Students are not admitted into a specific engineering degree program, or major, until they have completed all FYE requirements. This usually requires at least two semesters of study. In the final semester in FYE, a student will make a formal request for a degree program through the “Transition to Major” process. Admission into engineering degree programs may be competitive, particularly for programs at or over enrollment capacity.

The average GPA doesn’t mean that is what it takes to be admitted to the major!

And admissions to major being “competitive” does not mean that it’s a competitive environment for students amongst each other. Engineering at Purdue is all about work groups, project teams, etc… Very, very collaborative and had a much more laid back vibe than nearly every other engineering program we toured (15 schools).

And the reason they worry about capacity limits is so that the class sizes don’t get out of hand.

Hopefully some other Purdue parents will chime in here about their children’s experiences.

But, if Purdue doesn’t seem like a good fit, that’s totally fine, I just don’t want misinformation to be spread about the transition to major process or the GPA thresholds. IMO, it’s one of the most unnecessarily worried about part of Purdue, especially for strong students!

Best of luck to your student.

PS. For others reading, my D’s boyfriend was a mech E. He struggled freshman year due to some health challenges. Wasn’t even close to the GPA cut off. He delayed the ToM process until after 1st semester sophomore year and was admitted to mech E then. He was still able to graduate in 8 semesters.
