Purdue Learning Communities

Hi,

I have been accepted to Purdue, although I did not apply to Honors College. I want to know more about LC’s and which are better than others, and perhaps someone who has friends in different LC’s can give me some insight into this. I am in the College of Engineering.

My first question is whether I can apply to LC’s outside of my college. Under the page “Learning Communities Available to Students in the College of Engineering”
there is a list that includes engineering-specific LC’s and some general ones. If I apply for LC’s and I check an LC not on that list, is there a possibility of getting in?

My second question is about the Public Speaking about Health LC
(https://www.purdue.edu/studentsuccess/orientation/learning_communities/profiles/University-wide%20LCs/Public_Health.html).
I am interested in this one (maybe my top choice), and I would like to know about the demographics. Is it mostly med students here even though it is offered to all students? Will I be the only engineering student here?

My third question is about the Engineering Challenges LC
(https://www.purdue.edu/studentsuccess/orientation/learning_communities/profiles/engineering/ENGR_Challenges.html).
The page says “Details regarding this Learning Community will be updated soon.” and I do not see it listed as an option when I go to the application page for LC’s. Is this being offered or not?

My fourth question is about the Engineering Honors LC
(https://www.purdue.edu/studentsuccess/orientation/learning_communities/profiles/engineering/engineering_honors.html).
If I did not apply to the Honors College, is this still available to me? When I read about the Honors College online, I thought it was for other fields like medicine (not engineering) so I thought that there would be no benefit to applying to the Honors College as an engineering student. I did not know about this LC and its (possible) dependence on enrollment in the Honors College. I did apply by November 1st though, but not with the Honors College box checked (Common App).

My fifth question is about the application page for LC’s and the AP class option. Is it better to leave all of them unchecked in case it interferes with eligibility for an LC? The only AP class I have taken is Computer Science. Will that affect my eligibility for the LC’s I listed below?

My last question: talk about your experiences with these LC’s (and rank them if possible)
Global Engineering Cultures and Practice
Engineering Challenges (if offered)
Public Speaking about Health
Other LC’s you recommend (does not have to be engineering, but engineering is preferred)

Thank you for reading this long post! I’m looking forward to your suggestions! Boiler Up!

I believe the Engineering Honors LC is eligible for the honored students only, as on the website it stated “First-time beginning students admitted to First-Year Engineering AND participating in the Honors College.”

P.S I am consider IDEAS and EPICS, but I heard EPICS gives you loads of work. I wanna see what Engineering Challenges LC is all about as well.

IDEAS sounds interesting; I might consider it. Bummer about Engineering Honors, but I guess it’s fine since you can only end up in one LC. I still have plenty of time to decide.
