Son is considering attending Purdue in the fall as a graduate student. He hasn’t visited the campus yet. Any advice on off campus housing? Areas to look or avoid? Is the general area safe and walkable? When are leases usually signed for fall housing? Is the spring too late for this? Thank you!

Leases are signed pretty early, late Fall for the following year but there are always plenty of students looking to sublease their apartments.
Purdue and surroundings are very safe and there are buses. Walkability depends where you are living. There are some apartments that are closer to academic buildings than some dorms. Typically the closer to campus, the higher the rent.
My D is subletting an apartment next year when she returns from coop that is a 5 minute drive from campus. There is a bus that stops at the complex but she will also get a commuter permit for her car and parking is fairly convenient on campus. Her rent is dirt cheap.
