I see that only 35% of Purdue students live on campus. I'm curious as to why this number is so low?

At many large universities, most non-frosh live off-campus.

Purdue does not indicate the percentage of frosh living on-campus (a reasonable proxy for resident (vs. commuter) students). It also says that frosh get priority for on-campus housing, but not a guarantee.

For comparison, Michigan has 97% of frosh living on-campus (where they are guaranteed dorm space) and 34% of all undergraduates living on-campus.
