Purdue or IU?

I have been accepted to both Purdue and IU and plan on majoring in biology and doing premed. I am unsure about which school to attend because both appeal to me, though i have recently had more interest in attending IU. That being said I am still considering Purdue, because I have been told it's better academically. I am hoping to get some advice on this matter so that I can be confident and sure of my decision for next year. Please help :)

Purdue is better academically and has a better reputation. Purdue dominates in almost every single science/ technology based program. Top 5 engineering school, top 5 pharmacy school, top 50 buisness school according to Newsweek, and there undergrad bio program is ranked in the top 50. The research at Purdue is a powerhouse! Amazing research being done there. Also, Purdues bio department is one of the only schools i know that offers a NeuroBiology and Physiology program. I am from Jersey, and trust me the Purdue name has a lot of weight down here. All the top engineering firms in this metro area is full of Purdue grads. Come next fall I will most likely be there as an undergrad student studying Biomed. As for IU, the only thing they have going on or them as of now is a good basketball team.

Higgins, I think you need to really investigate both schools and the opportunities each offers to undergraduates. Yes, Purdue is ranked in pharmacy and engineering but since IU has neither of those programs it really doesn’t matter. I do know that IU has some amazing undergraduate research opportunities in chemistry and biology. One family friend who was accepted at both schools decided that IU offered the better opportunities; he ended up as a Goldwater Scholar at IU and is now in a doctoral program at Duke.

EChoudhu’s statement is almost categorically false. IU and Purdue each has their own strength. IU has more of a reputation for Premed bio, but Purdue is much better known for their lab work and more technical biology degrees.

And from what I have heard, Purdue doesn’t have a business school. It is the Krannert School of MANAGEMENT.

I have 2 brothers that are doctors… one went IU the other Purdue. They both ended up at IUPUI for Med School. Go with the one you feel more at home… you cant go wrong.

Similar response to another topic… I would look wider than biology for premed. When I did my undergraduate degree it seemed like all of my biology friends applied to medical school and some were denied because they brought no unique background with them. Think about programs like nutrition science (preventive medicine is huge right now), bio-medical engineering (engineering is a good fall back plan), neuroscience, etc. Almost all my friends from those programs got in. Biology majors are a dime a dozen when applying for medical school. Specific to your question, Purdue is a higher ranked institution with higher job placement (91% compared to almost 75%) and graduate school placement (consistently 85-90%) ranks. There is also an IU School of Medicine on the Purdue campus that shares space with the College of Health and Human Sciences; since the state government didn’t duplicate professional school funding there are also campuses at Ball State and Indiana State.

I would say many people come to IU thinking they’re sticking with premed and the vast majority drop out of it. I would say IU offers a better environment than Purdue. The classic college town.
