So I've run out of time and I really need to make my decision really soon. Ok I'm a girl from new York going for engineering and I've been accepted to both schools. Purdue will cost without including loans 45000 and rpi would cost about 33000 a year maybe a little more.

Okay. So everything about purdue seems better to me over rpi except for the extra money a year and the location I guess. The facilities at purdue were literally amazing. They looked brand new and I could really see myself motivated to do my work. At rpi everything seemed alright I guess. Maybe they didn't show us their best facilities.. But if they did then I'm a little under impressed. Also the dooms.. Not that it's that big of a deal.. But they took us through hall hall at rpi and walking through them literally put a depressed feeling over me plus they had no study area. They had a lounge at the end of the hall that had no desks or tables.. Just a couch that im pretty sure was covered in gum. I know people say Barton is nice.. But I didn't fill out a housing sheet.. And it's may sixth.. So I won't get it. The dooms at purdue were smaller but the study areas in the dorm were amazing. Huge clean study areas with tables and then there was a gaming center with pool tables on the other side. I, again, was overly impressed. Everybody always tells me that purdue is a poor school and rpi has money.. But you could have fooled me.

Alright I've heard a ton of debate on this.. But purdue is technically ranked better. A lot of people will argue that rpi is.. But Im worried of those people are all from the northeast and if I move south will rpis name stretch that far over purdue like people say it does in the northeast.

Also I'm very social and I love going out and going to parties. And I kinda wanted that college experience. I mean I know that purdue would offer me a great experience.. Especially with their football and basketball teams which I love watching. I'm just worried that by my sophomore year I'll get sick of going out and end up watching tv every weekend and just wasting that extra ten thousand dollars a year for something I could be doing at rpi. I know people at rpi do go out.. But I hear that theyre very strict about parties sometimes. Also Im I'm in the Facebook group for rpi people seemed so competitive. Somebody posted a poll asking people their sat scores and then someone else did act scores also I kinda liked that I'd be one of the smarter ones on campus rather than probably one of the dumber ones. and the girls seemed either very nerdy or pretty nasty. I know I'm not perfect and although I'd never be mean to anyone.. I'm very instinctively judgemental and I wish I wasn't because its one of the things I hate most about myself and I'm not the type to try and get out to make friends because when I'm around people I don't know I'm pretty quiet. The guys at rpi seemed really nice though. I also hate it when people tell me college is what you make of it haha.. I've heard it so many times.. And it really means nothing to me.

Another thing I liked about purdue was even though it's a state school.. The school seemed more involved with their students. All of the students and advisors seemed to practically be friends. I felt more comfortable that I wouldn't feel so alone in things.

And I don't mean to make it seem like I've already chosen purdue. I hate that it's extra money.. But during my visit a student told me she was practically going there for free
Because her advisor during her sophomore year applied for scholarships for her.. But I don't know what kind of grades she received. But rpis money situation is great.. Plus I received work study which I heard are sooo easy. I just really dont know if I want to be working over summers and stuff for my entire paycheck to be going to student loans. Also I liked that rpi is in new York. Its so close to home and I'm worried that at purdue I'd mostly meet people from Indiana and we'd be totally different.

I also liked the accelerated MBA program at rpi that's five years.. But I don't know of I'd be able to handle that amount of work.

I just really need help and I don't want to look back on my life and say I made the wrong choice. If anyone has a relatively unbiased opinion or goes to any of these schools and can disagree with any of my thoughts I'd be so grateful

I meant the costs including loans would be those numbers.

And I meant one of the smarted ones at purdue rather than one of the dumb ones at rpi. I’m just proof reading it now

Run the numbers here, and then choose the one that will leave you and your family with the least amount of debt: [FinAid | Calculators | Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Award Letter Requirements - Finaid)

These are both very good institutions, and will get you started on the next stage of your life. It is perfectly OK to choose the one that will be cheaper, so you have more cash left over to begin that next stage with.

Rather than letting random information from Facebook mess up your emotions, stop reading things that people post there. Who cares what their SAT scores are? What matters from now on is how you perform in your classes, internships, and jobs.

Lastly, and you know I’ve got to ask this: Didn’t you apply anywhere else that would be more affordable? If you are a NYS resident, what is wrong with all of the CUNY/SUNY system?

Purdue will cost without including loans 45000 and rpi would cost about 33000 a year maybe a little more

I still don’t understand your clarifications.

Exactly what aid did Purdue give you? Grants? Merit? and how much in loans?

How much will your parents pay?

Do you still have some uncovered costs that will require loans?

Where else did you apply?

What are your stats?

I got into Binghamton and geneseo… But geneseo I applies to more in case I decided I wanted to go into teaching… And bings engineering program wasnt that great. I applied to buffalo… But I applied really late… To the point where they still haven’t answered me yet.

Purdue costs 45000 but with loans they gave me it would be like 39000. With rpi they gave me a big scholarship and It’s about 33000-35000 and with the loans they gave me it would be like 29000. So it’s like a ten thousand dollar difference. But I don’t really count the loans because I have to pay them back anyway… So purdue really gave me nothing… My parents can pay like 27000 a year and possibly help me out later depending on things… So I’d have about 70000 in loans from purdue and about 30000 from rpi at the end of four years. But If I do the five year MBA program at rpi it would be a fifth year… But I keep my scholarship and my parents said they’d help me out a bit too.

Pretty much rpi sounds the best on paper… I just don’t know if it’s a good fit for me.

And those are really my two best choices

And bings engineering program

Doesn’t Bing have a strong eng’g program?

================

That is waaaayyyy tooo much in loans for Purdue. Twice the amount that you should have. Did your parents say that they would co-sign (hope not)?

What are your stats?

GPA?

Test scores?

Purdue gives some merit scholarships and yet you got nothing?

“Alright now Binghamton. I loved it. When I visited I just said… I can see myself here. It was literally my school.”

I think you should go to Bing…guess what? A company isn’t going to pay you more for a degree from Purdue. You’d get the same pay with a Bing degree. So, let yourself have the money and not some loan company.

Bing was my first choice and everyone talked me out of it. I have a weighted 4.0 gpa and a 1900 on sat

Who is “everyone”? Why would people talk you out of Bing? Crazy.

The only people who have a right to talk you out of attending a given college/university are the people who say “Here are $X to cover your costs at College/University Y.”

Sit down with your parents. Run the calculator I gave you the link for. Talk about just exactly where the money is going to come from and just exactly who is responsible for paying back your loans. Then decide.

Bing is the best value of the schools on your list. If it is your top choice I would go there.

My parents are the ones who talked me out of it haha

Well, if they’re not going to pay all of Purdue’s costs, then they aren’t doing you any favors. Purdue is too much debt. And frankly, too risky for you. Your test scores are borderline for a Purdue engineer (SAT 1900). There’s a good chance you wont’ make it in that program. Then what? A bunch of debt and no eng’g degree.

Is it too late for Binghamton? The engineering school started in the 80s so has not had time to build a reputation, but it does attract money and good students. Last I knew they had some great professors there. RPI started in 1824 and has been training engineers forever, but that does not make it the better choice today. Purdue - $10,000 per year extra for parties and football games?

Engineers, by an large, have twice the workload and end up socially isolated wherever they are.

“There’s a good chance you wont’ make it in that program.” Mom has a lot of good advice in this forum but this one is a little over the top. Purdue is well known for its engineering program but I don’t think there is evidence to suggest you wouldn’t be able to handle it and basing it on a SAT score of 1900 certainly isn’t it.
