Purdue University or Virginia Tech for engineering?

I got accepted into engineering at Purdue and Virginia Tech. I am a Maryland resident, so both are out of state but Virginia Tech is closer. Purdue is ranked highly for engineering while Virginia doesn’t make it to top 10. But Virginia also has a solid program. I hope to major in Mechanical Engineering, and Purdue has requirements to maintain 3.2 GPA first year to get into mechanical engineering, while Virginia Tech doesn’t have GPA requirements. I want to chose the college that will secure my future, for example finding a job easily. I am torn between these 2 colleges. I would appreciate any input about which college I should chose. Thank You

Purdue, hands down.

Curious @Snowwhite123 . Did you consider UMD CP since you’re a Maryland resident? We’re out of state for both and my son chose UMD over Purdue.

I did not get accepted into engineering at UMD. They said that I could do an internal transfer but I’d rather go to a college where I start in engineering.

@Snowwhite123 - engineering is a lot of work and engineering where you need to compete to get into a specific major is a LOT of work. I would think about the trade-off - a better name on your resume vs a “sure thing” on your major. Because it isn’t a sure thing you’ll get into ME at Purdue. I would never recommend against going for a better engineering program and Purdue’s ME program is really good but I think you have to really want it and be willing to work your tail off to stay in ME at Purdue. BTW, my D’s best friend didn’t make the ME “cut” two years ago at Purdue because they had too many MEs and they raised the cutoff GPA for his year. :frowning: That said - my D is a Purdue engineer and loves it there.

These are both great, well known schools for engineering. Recruitment will be very good at both. The factors to consider-cost, fit, logistics. Hopefully, you have also attended admitted student days to help you decide which you prefer.

VT frosh engineering students need a 3.0 college GPA to automatically be able to choose their major; otherwise, admission to majors is competitive by college GPA for those which have space.

Purdue does not explicitly guarantee that a 3.2 college GPA will automatically allow you into the first choice major (“and if the degree program is not over critical capacity”). You may want to ask directly which majors are over critical capacity. https://engineering.purdue.edu/ENE/Academics/FirstYear/T2M

Maryland change into the engineering division has a 3.0 college GPA requirement and grade requirements in specific courses, but is not assured even if you meet the criteria.

Thank you to everyone for their comments. I have decided on Purdue University!!

Hope you enjoy your time at Purdue!

@Snowwhite123 - Hail Purdue! FYI - my D chose to live on a freshman Women in Engineering floor at Purdue and it was really helpful - the dorm (Earhart) is well located and many of the women on her floor freshman year are still her best friends. FYE is hard work but a support group helps out! I hope you love your time in college.
