Purdue University

I'm interested in Computer Science & Engg. Heard mixed reviews about Purdue.
Is it any good ? As good as Georgia Tech, UIUC, UT Austin et al ? Or say, Ohio/Maryland(Coll Park)/Lehigh/McGill/Waterloo/U of Toronto ?

Bump. 10 chars.

Im wondering this too. Its ranked as a top school for engineering (better than 95% of the ivies) but its admission stats are pathetic, avg admitted GPA = 3.4 and 650 for most sections 75th Percentile SAT.

Im guessing it might be because its engineering section is so small that mabye they dont reach the 75th percentile? But Im wondering a good amount about this too.

Just judging by its reputation where I live (in Ohio) I would think it's a peer to at least the American schools on your list when it comes to engineering. Maybe a little better than some, a little behind others, but in the general ballpark.

It's not so well known for non-engineering, non science fields.

What ?

Evidently Purdue accepts 76% of their applicants.

Selectivity aside, Purdue is a great engineering school.

The collegeboard.com figure is 85%.

The midwest state schools were based on the idea that as many students as possible deserved a chance at a top quality higher education. They make getting in relatively easy and they then make sure that only the best graduate. It is just a different philosophy than the east coast privates.

engineering... right on par with umich-gt-berkely(maybe), just a tier below caltech-mit-stanford... outside of engineering... nothing really special. if ur an engineer from purdue thats awesome... business major from purdue much less awesome.

As good as U Mich and GT ? Are you serious ?

Purdue is a very good engineering school and they admit a lot more people than can handle the work. However, I think its different than Georgia Tech in that Georgia Tech is more of the MIT model and specifically teaches to the top of the class. Purdue is a little kinder in that they tend to teach to the middle of the class. One of the guys who works for me who did his undergrad at Purdue and grad at UIUC said that the Purdue class tends to bifurcate in those who get it and end up with a GPA in the mid to upper 3's and those who really don't and end up with a GPA in the mid 2's. He liked Purdue but said that some classes were a little slower than he would have liked.

For undergrad, I would put it below UIUC, GT, Michigan, above Ohio State, on par with Maryland, and I don't know enough graduates of the other schools that you mentioned to comment though they all have good reputations.

Just what I was looking for ! Thanks :) !

Seems like a decent enough safety then.
