Purdue versus Virginia Tech for mechanical engineering

I am so torn between the two. Between Purdue and Virginia Tech, they are roughy the same cost and distance from my home (Ohio). They also have pretty close rankings with Purdue always slightly better, however I acknowledge there’s not going to be a drastic difference with them being so close.

I hope to go into something like NASA or a nonprofit organization for research or in some way making the world a better place with mechanical engineering.

I visited Purdue last week, and loved it! I felt that the atmosphere was so focused on academics. I also love the beautiful campus. It felt secluded from Lafayette, therefore focused, but definitely still close by to have some fun on the weekends. I have yet to visit Virginia tech, and I’m hoping to get some vibes there.

Any insight anyone can give? This is my first post in College Confidential, so I’m excited to see how this works!

I live in Virginia & my dad went to VT for engineering, so I’m definitely a bit biased. He had a great experience and is successful. Personally, I would choose Virginia Tech, but that being said, I really don’t know much about Purdue. I would recommend visiting VT and deciding from there. You really won’t know what you want until you see it, so I think it will be clearer after a visit. Good luck!
