Purdue vs. Georgia Tech?

Hi everyone, i am currently a senior in high school. i have a GPA of 4.3(weighted) and almost all the extracurricular offered at my school (not sports) such as: NHS, MUN, Habitat, Earth club, Student govt., etc, etc.

i recently got into purdue and georgia tech for mechanical engineering. But i can't decide which one i should pick. I have heard georgia i really hard to maintain a good gpa, which eventually affects the choice of masters.

So help me out! Purdue? or Georgia? for mechanical engineering and why?
thanks a bunch people

GTech is better academic wise but if you don’t want to be in a city then go to Purdue.

Are you in-state for either school?

Can you afford the costs of either school?

Out of state - Cost of Attendance (COA)…

GT…$38,200 per year

Purdue…$37,500 per year

Did either school give you any scholarships?

If money is no object, then…GT has a higher ranking…

But what else do you want in a school? Do you want more of a 50/50 male/female split?

Purdue. Definitely. GTech – girls suck (if you care, but I assume you don’t) and their professors try to screw you over and mess you up.

No i am out of state for both. But their cost is pretty much the same, so thats not an issue

But like which school will be a better experience? As mentioned: “GT professors try to screw you over and mess you up.” i’ve heard that from a lot of students. is that really true?

I want a good Gpa in college and better overall experience. A college that will make me a better engineer.

My goal was to get into top ones: MIT, Caltech, Stanford- but my SATs srcewed me over. 3 people got into stanford from my school, whom i beat in every course…the only thing they have is better SAT and a few sports…but unfortunately i did poorly on SAT

So plan as of now is to go to GT or Purdue for first 2 years and then transfer to one of those schools. How feasible is that? Can i retake SAT by the end of this year (i’ll be in college then?

WHat do they look for in transfer? So which one GT or purdue will help be get into those schools?

Top elite schools are hard to transfer into - some don’t take ANY transfers.

You mention that since GT and Purdue are about the same price ($38k) and that that is ok. But, those elite schools are going to be $60k per year when you transfer. They aren’t likely going to give you good aid as a transfer, so can your family afford that price, too? If not, you’ll likely have to stay at your school for 4 years and consider an elite school for grad school.

If you want a more fuller campus experience and more girls, choose Purdue. If you’re not interested in that, then choose GT. Either school will provide an excellent education.

I would far rather attend GaTech, mostly because of location. West Lafayette is not my idea of an ideal college town. And GT still has athletics, a Greek system, etc. – it’s not like there’s nothing to do on campus but study. Re: girls, an advantage of GT’s location is that there are a lot of other colleges nearby with lots more girls. Ga State is practically next door.

Well as for transfer to the elite school…Yes, it is quite difficult. Its around 30-40 students every year- which is very difficult to make…but i’m still considering to apply, i mean there’s no harm and i’ve always wanted to.

If i’m lucky and get in, yes it a way above the family’s budget so i’ll have to take student loan or some scholarships or do co-op…haven’t thought about it yet.

thanks a lot though

Are you an American or green card resident?

Well, since you like prestige, then go to Georgia Tech. If you like it then why not?

No i’m neither american or a green card holder. I am an international student. Is that going to make any difference?

I’d say Purdue. Purdue has a beautiful environment and excellent dining and housing! Georgia Tech and Purdue are the same academically, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Plus, Georgia’s environment is bad! A lot of rude people there, and the campus isn’t very safe for students. And the GIRLS-SUCK! Purdue is way better than Georgia. If i were you, i would go to Purdue. It would be better to go to Purdue if you want to transfer. I’ve heard it’s easier. GO PURDUE!

Purdue has a more laid back environment. More girls. 2nd largest Greek Life system in the US. Huge Athletics program. Collegetown. Friendly people. It’s a win-win situation.

* yes it a way above the family’s budget so i’ll have to take student loan

No i’m neither american or a green card holder. I am an international student. Is that going to make any difference? *

Yes, for two reasons…

1) It is harder for int’ls to get accepted.

2) Student loans are for citizens and green card residents. You’ll probably have a harder time getting a private loan, and you’ll need a co-signer.

Did you apply for financial aid?

BTW…You may already know this, but…no matter where you go, do not tell your classmates/roommates that you’re only staying for 2 years and then transferring to a more elite school. That will not go over well.

You haven’t even been to Georgia, much less Georgia Tech, have you?

To the OP: Have fun at Purdue

^ Yeah I second mom2collegekids statement on not telling your friends about you transferring. Many people think college friends would be lifelong friends more or less too so yeah if you aren’t there they may not want to be around you. But it can always differ I guess.
