Purdue vs NC State

I posted this in the Purdue forum as well, just wanted to get you guys’ thoughts

NC State would be in state for me, but I’m not a big fan of the culture or the campus in general and would largely prefer Purdue. I’ve gotten accepted into both, and plan to go to med school. Thoughts?

Since you plan on med school, you should consider how much you are willing to spend on undergrad. I suspect NCSU would save you a bundle.

Purdue has more of a name brand than NCST but they are equivalent academically. In fact, NCST has a higher percentage of STEM students. Save the money and go to NCST.

Money is a big factor, assuming it is a concern for you. How much debt are you willing to take on before you even start med school? You could go to State then go to UNC Chapel Hill for medical school - both in state.

^ All very good advice, which you should follow.

Do you know how much medical school costs? How much are you willing to go into debt? Where else have you been accepted (or think you will be accepted)?

It comes down to cost. Going out of state costs 2-3 times more than going in-state. Unless mom and dad are willing to pick up the extra cost, you’re far better off going in-state. Plus state medical schools typically favor candidates from within their home state. What’s going to matter most are your grades and your MCAT scores.

I’m in the same boat. I got accepted to purdue and state… but I really really would rather not go to state since I basically live there already and it would just be a continuation of hs since a large percentage of our senior class ends up there. The cost is a huge factor, but not only is Purdue a chance for independence, it is just a bigger school overall. More resources and funding imo. I also hear they have some really amazing professors. I suggested touring both to get a feel for your program.
