One of my close friends, an aspiring mechanical engineer, needs help in deciding between Purdue (West Lafayette), Ohio State and Virginia Tech. He would like to know how the colleges differ from each other in terms of academics, student bodies, campus life and location (are there things to do or not). Unfortunately, He can't visit the colleges because of time constraints, so he's counting on you- the wise users of CC- to help him. Oh, costs are not an issue, so don't worry about them.

All choices will provide a great education for a mechanical engineer. Environments are quite different.

Costs should be an issue. Since these schools are similar academic-wise and especially if your friend wants to work as an engineer, I’d choose the cheapest option. If costs are similar, then choose for other factors. VT and Purdue are rural with a strong tech/engineering focus. tOSU is bigger, urban, and more diverse academically and culturally. All are good choices. Your friend won’t go wrong.

Perhaps I should have been a little clearer on the cost part. He’s an international student who’s sponsored by his country’s government, so he doesn’t have to worry about costs. Anyway, thanks you for contributing. Anyone else?

Purdue would be my choice but Ohio State would be a close 2nd and being an international student I might opt for the diversity of OSU and Columbus.
