Hi,
Our son got accepted in those 3 colleges in computer science but we don’t really know which one to pick as we are from France. With the corona virus we can’t even visit any of them anymore so it’s pretty hard to decide which one to pick. Would you recommend any of them?
Thank you so much for your help.
Based on its strength in computer science, your son may want to consider RPI strongly. If he would prefer less of a concentrated tech environment, he could find that at one of his other choices.
If you would like an opinion on Troy, it tends towards grittiness by the standards of polished, shiny cities. Nonetheless, its greater region has a lot to offer.
Would you provide more information about your son’s personality and what he is looking for beyond academics?
My D is in her second year at Purdue (for engineering though, not CS). She chose Purdue over a big scholarship at RPI. She wanted a large school experience. Also felt the students she met at Purdue were more collaborative and happy. She was also nervous about RPI’s new Arch program which she would have been in the first class.
Purdue has far exceeded all of our expectations. Educationally, socially, with leadership opportunities, and work experiences.
Happy to answer any specific questions you may have about Purdue.
My son is more of an introvert. He loves fencing. He doesn’t care living in a small city. He reads a lot and is very patient with his 2 little brothers. He has always been interested in CS but he also loves math, history and psychology. We are leaving in the Silicon Valley right now.
I’d recommend looking at the 4 year plan of study for each school and seeing how much space there are for electives.
Also look up the fencing clubs at all the schools and have your son reach out to them for more information.
Boulder alum here. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever lived. It’s been decades and I don’t know about comp sci, but quality of life there in terms of weather, access to outdoor activities, arts/music scene, etc. is outstanding.
Another thing to consider is ease/cost of travel.
