I have got 2020 in SAT (Maths-680 CR-630 Writing-710) along with 780 in SAT physics and 770 in Math II. Now i am an international student, did my schooling outside US which didn’t have a GPA system, though i always scored above 90% and topped my class. Do I have any chance of admission in reputed engineering colleges in Purdue or Georgia Tech?
Purdue – Match.
Georgia Tech – Reach.
@iamjack: So what do i have to get to make georgia match too…?
Your sat scores is weak, AND you are an international student. I got rejected as a national with a 2130 SAT and a 3.79 UW GPA. My weighted GPA was just around 4.0 I believe. I also had a 780 SAT 2 math score and a 760 chem sat score (which are very similar to yours). I think you would have to significantly raise your SAT. Also, you haven’t listed your EC’s so I’m assuming you didn’t do anything extraordinary. My EC’s were probably average to slightly below average. I just volunteered a lot and had one officer position in a school club. I also had one internship, but that was about it… no competitions or anything. Maybe if you won a pretty significant competition, your chances might increase. I’m not too sure how hard it is to get into Purdue as an international but as a national you are in. If it’s only a little bit harder, then I would say you are still in.
@iamjack: Actually, I am an US citizen…only I did my high school outside US…my EC’s are good i think. I have done some volunteering work during the earthquake in Nepal few months back. I also have some research experience in a local college here…and i took part in a robotics competition from my school in 7th grade ( we even made it to national level)…do you think that would increase my chances…or should I give the SAT again. coz even if i do give it again, i have no idea how to raise my scores…?
Mmm, I’m not 100% sure how that 7th grade competition would look. You might want to PM some other more prominent posters and ask them because I’m not sure if you should list middle school competitions.
Yeah, I was in the same boat as you in the SAT. I took a class and usually on practice exams I got 2050’s, but someone when it came to the real exam I got a 2130. My parents were happy but said I should take it again and work harder, although I really didn’t know how to improve it. I decided to take another try about 5 months later, but at that time I forgot a lot of vocab words and lots some reading skills because I didn’t really practice in those 5 months. I ended up getting a 1990 the second time, but thankfully a lot of colleges don’t ask you for ALL your SAT’s.
I guess if you didn’t already take classes and you’re still a junior, you can try taking SAT classes (because that’s how I got my SAT score past the 2000 ranges).
I also think your EC’s are averagish (just like mine) depending on what that research was.
@DrGoogle might be a pretty good chancer for you.
Also correction: I realized in my 2nd post I should have specified that I only got rejected by Georgia Tech. I got into Purdue however.
so you are now in purdue? how is it there? are the profs good…and what about the campus life there?
Why don’t you take the SAT again, or take the ACT?. There are plenty of on-line tutorials/classes like prepscholar. WIth a 33 or 34 on the ACT or 1400+ on the new SAT you should be admitted to both.
I think you have a chance. Your physics and math subject test scores are very good. Your sat on low side. Your grades are good. And no you dont need to win some robotics competition to get into tech. My d is at tech and none of her friends have these crazy ecs that im aware of and my d did not. Your essays are important and dont blowoff service essay. And no my d did not start some charity or anything just normal stuff. Did she have perfect grades? No.
@TooOld4School: No more time. I am in my senior year now and hopefully, go to college next fall. November 7 is my 2nd and last shot at the SAT 1.
@scubadive: Thanks. That reassures me a lot.
GT RD deadline is Jan 10, Purdue is Feb 1. You should be fine with the December test dates. Good luck!
I called them (Purdue) they sad that at this moment they do not have many applications rolling in. As long as you beat the peak period you should be fine. However I do suggest applying before November end . A 2020 SAT is not too bad actually, is it super scored?
You can always send in your common app and transcripts now and send sat scores later, not that it changes anything but just a tip
But don’t be discouraged by Georgia tech. SAT doesn’t mean the end of the line. You’ve got good grades, so I see not harm in applying. I’m assuming you’re going for engineering , so I suggest applying to umich and UIUC as well, you never know.
The mid 50 for pudue engineering stretches to 2080. Ok I think I’ve said enough
