*** Purdue - West Lafayette - Class of 2021 - Results Thread ***

Date applied : 10/31

Decision: Waitlisted (from deny/offer alternate major)

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 1520 (670 math/ 750 English) one sitting.
ACT: N/A
SAT II: N/A
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.5
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 30% (School does not provide percentile ranks past this marker)

Subjective:

[Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Girl scouts (state level board member, rep at national leadership conferences), Local Youth Board (Co-President), FCCLA (Vice President), Freelance Design work, Engineering club
Volunteer/Community service: GS summer camp counselor, 5th grade camp counselor, volunteer supervision at local event with ~ 10k in attendance, Repeated participant at various community events. (approx. 350 hours)
Personal Statement: 8/10

Other:

 Applied for Financial Aid?: No
 Intended Major: FYE (aerospace)
 State (if domestic applicant): WA
 Country (if international applicant):
 School Type: Public
 Ethnicity: White
 Gender: Girl
 Income Bracket: 400k +
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): I'm not sure if being a girl counts. Maybe the Gold Award, or ADHD.

Reflection:

Strengths: Junior/Senior GPA (3.95), SAT scores, extra curricular activities, letters of recommendation. Incredibly steep upward trend.
Weaknesses: overall GPA/poor math and science grades the year before being diagnosed with ADHD. GPA might have been a component, but the Admissions office told me my chem grade, and math grade were the big problem.
Schools were you accepted/waitlisted to? WSU (auto admit)
Schools you were rejected from? None yet. WPI and boulder should be soon though.
Schools you are waiting for? MIT, UW, WPI, RPI, CPSLO, USC, UBC, CU boulder, VA tech.
General Comments: Its really competitive this year. Good luck to everyone. If you're in a situation like mine, take another chem class! I decided to self study, and skip a year of clac, I think I'd have had a better shot if I had done chemistry instead. They really wanted by SAT scores though, so if you really just want to go to Purdue, SAT scores can do that for you, but you'll have to go through exploratory studies. I opted for Wait-list instead.

[

[
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): I’m not sure if I had any big “hooks.” Maybe that I’m from a nationally ranked, competitive public high school?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: High ACT and GPA (relative to Purdue), high involvement and dedication to ECs.
[
] Weaknesses: No community service, lack of awards, ECs didn’t relate to intended major.
[] Schools were you accepted/waitlisted to? San Diego State University
[
] Schools you were rejected from? None

University of Texas at Austin, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UCLA, UCSD, University of Washington, Cal Poly SLO, San Jose State, University of Maryland - College Park (I’ll maybe edit this post as I get accepted to these, since I think it will help!)[/li][/ul]General Comments: I think it’s really important to maintain your voice in your essays! It’s easy to come off as robotic after having 50 people look at your essays (as I’ve seen in some of my friends’ essays), so don’t fall into that trap! Also, show passion for your major. Even if your ECs don’t correlate with the major you’ve chosen, if you show passion for the major you apply for, you’ll definitely have a chance of getting in!

[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at my school’s summer orchestra academy(helped teach 5th-8th graders how to play violin/viola), volunteered at school’s summer Latin camp(basically just helped to teach about Latin and the Classics), I also volunteered a little through NHS
[
] Personal Statement:
Common App: I honestly have no idea. I talked about solving the Rubik’s Cube and related it back to my life. My Lit teacher liked it, but I don’t know how the college admissions officers felt.
Purdue: 7/10, They were alright. I just talked about my major and how Purdue would be a good fit.

[li] Schools you are waiting for? UMich, UC Berkeley, Wisconsin, Tufts, Vanderbilt, Brown (I have quite a few reaches, but you might as well try, right?)[/li][/ul]General Comments: Be yourself! Do the things that you want to do, not the things you think colleges want you to do. Just be yourself, and if colleges think you’ll be a good fit, they’ll let you in. If not, then it just wasn’t meant to be (at least, this is what I’ve been telling myself).

Good luck to everyone else who applied and for future applicants: don’t worry about college until you are applying. Be passionate in all that you do (pursue your interests, don’t just do what you think colleges want to see you do) and let that shine through in your essays! You can message me if you have any questions at all (although I’m not sure how much help I can be). Congrats to everyone already accepted. Boiler Up!

BTW: I only posted the scholarship I got for reference for future applicants. I have used CC since freshman year and I just want to put out another resource for people applying in the future.

[ *] SAT I (breakdown): 1410 new SAT (720 M + 690 CR); I had a medical reason not to retake, but I wish I could’ve gotten my score up, as this was from only one sitting.
[ *] ACT: did not submit
[ *] SAT II: n/a
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.89; 4.21 weighted

[ *] IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
[ *] Senior Year Course Load: This has taken a bit of a turn since I applied to Purdue due to a new illness, but when I applied: AP government (dropped down to regular online after I got sick), AP English, AP physics (I may switch to a lower level because I’m still sick). I take the following classes at my local community college: calc II, linear algebra, an introductory engineering class (designed to match the second-semester first-year intro to engineering class at Virginia Tech), C++, and chemistry.
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): n/a.

[ *] Job/Work Experience: n/a
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: science museum volunteer and camp counselor, Jewish camp counselor, I lead services when a rabbi isn’t available and I do other volunteering through the synagogue.
[ *] Personal Statement: I think it’s probably a pretty mediocre one. 6/10, maybe. I wrote the “challenging an accepted belief” essay about how people in my family/community aren’t totally accepting of women in STEM and how I have every intention of changing that.

[ /list][ b]Reflection[ /b][ list]
[ *] Strengths: strong dedication to engineering for four years and ECs
[ *] Weaknesses: test scores, I had a few B’s.
[ *] Schools were you accepted/waitlisted to? Accepted to The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (already offered a scholarship), and Penn State
[ *] Schools you were rejected from? None yet, but I’m not expecting to get into W&L.
[ *] Schools you are waiting for? Washington & Lee University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia Tech
[ /list][ b]General Comments:[ /b] I didn’t expect to get in and I don’t know if I can go, but Purdue is my first choice. I really didn’t expect this. I think visiting campus really helped with my Purdue-specific essays and it showed them that I really care, so if you get a chance I highly recommend that you check it out. Good luck to everyone!
