Do math majors feel outnumbered at jhu where premed, IR, and other humanities dominate? How large and in-depth is the math program? Are there a lot of research opps too?

I know that last year the Math Department took out a full page ad (actually 2 full pages, so side by side type of deal) in the student newspaper (the hopkins newsletter) encouraging students to major in pure math! They even offer a 4 year BA/MA program (masters in 4 years is kind of nice actually...) So it's pretty obvious that they want more undergrads and that doesn't sound like a department that will ignore undergrads in favor of research -- otherwise they probably wouldn't encourage them!

No one "feels" outnumbered at JHU -- I'm in a very popular (2nd or 3rd largest) and I don't know too many people in my major! It's not like we clique out by major and don't talk to anyone else. I've met quiet a bit of pure math majors.

Enjoy!

I have a few friends who have/are majoring in math. Some do it as a double major and others have it as a primary major. One girl I know graduated this year with a 4 year BA/MA in both math and also applied math. She's going to math grad school @ Duke this fall.

You can become a math TA as an upperclassman in the math department. It also seems like there are a fair amount of other ways to get involved....their faculty are always in their offices and their department's lounge.

While math isn't a SUPER common major, it's definitely not rare, either.

Not much to add here. Best recommendation though -- contact the Math Department -- contact Math faculty. They enjoy speaking with prospective students and you will be surprised as to how much great detail they can provide. http://www.mathematics.jhu.edu/new/

Also, you should check out the Applied Mathematics and Statistics program in the Engineering school too: http://www.ams.jhu.edu/

Finally, a share one thing I know about Math faculty at JHU -- they are probably some of the most passionate faculty members about their field of study that you will find. They are completely engaged with undergraduates, especially in research!!!
