After I finish my undergrad work I really have my heart set on going to grad school for my PHD. I do know what the differences are between pure and applied math, and find myself interested in both. However, my question is if my goal is really to get into academia and become a professor, would one degree be better and the other when applying for a job? Also, are there any pros and cons to having one degree over the other? Thank you!

Well both are impressive, pure math does seem like it would be more difficult but both are equally as challenging. In my opinion an applied math phd would be more applicable in the academic world and non academic world. For the non academic, an applied mathematician will know more about math applications and could find more jobs. As for academia I find applied math more promising because there will most likely always be applied math fields thirsty for research because of scientists and inductive thinkers.
