I was looking at the Common Application, getting ready for next year, and noticed the "Additional Information" section at the bottom.

Looking through College Confidential about the section, I've seen some people mention that the entirety of this section should be filled up, regardless of whether or not you have pressing information to share. On the other hand, most people don't mention anything about it.

So, what's the answer? Should this section be filled only if you have something really important to communicate? Or should you fill it with any information you can until it's full?

You don’t have to fill every section.

Only put something in “add. info” section if it really is important: Things like you had to help with your autistic sibling so weren’t able to participate in ECs; you had to work a job to help your family pay the rent; your soph grades were low because you missed 60 days of school due to heart surgery…

“Additional Information” is a place to write explanations of something in your application, good or bad, that needs further clarification. It could also be the place to list all your awards or school involvement or clubs or leadership if you ran out of room.

Some folks think it’s your opportunity to share something about yourself that is completely controlled by you. Others think the adcoms don’t want to be bothered, preferring shorter, uncluttered applications. Add’l info is your choice, with whatever or nothing at all.
