Purpose of Life

I have spent 17 years in this world and I think I am finally starting to get a grasp of this "life" that we live everyday. We are start off at helpless babies and our parents work hard to raise us up and provide us with good education. Soon, parents get old and their children take over. The old go away to make room for the new and the pattern continues.

So, what exactly is the purpose of life? To me, it is not partying, going to school, or becoming the richest person in the world. It is a mere game. We eat, breathe, sleep. I think there is an ultimate goal - preparing ourselves for the end and becoming the best and wisest of people to pass to the next generation while we continously think about the future while living in the present.

This probably doesnt make too much sense right now as I am tired. But i am interested in what others believe is the purpose of life........

Does there have to be a purpose to everything?

First of all, read As You Like It:> “All the world 's a stage, and all the men and women merely players” (Act II, Scene VII).-Shakespeare

I feel that each individual holds a different purpose in life. I believe that each individual’s life holds significance; holds purpose. haha, to be honest, I could go into some long speech about my opinions that would turn into an essay lol Therefore, I’m just going to give a relatively short summary. Ultimately, I believe that we as humans are able to define and create our own purpose. I find that whether are attributions are large or small, we have a purpose. If one person hadn’t undergone some act, something would have change, whether or not it would be significant is irrelevant; something would be altered without that person’s actions. Some people are able to utilize their opportunities, enabling them to attribute more, thus creating a more purposeful role in society. Ultimately, I believe that while each individual life holds purpose and necessity, only those who utilize their opportunites will be those who hold the greatest purpose. (Sorry if none of that made sense, blame my sleep deprivation! lol)

I agree with rchhay; humans tend to overblow and overanalyze everything. nothing needs to have a purpose, it just so happens that some things do. but most of the things that have a definite purpose are man-made. what’s the purpose of education? to teach us. who made education? mankind. what’s the purpose of all of our agricultural tools, our technology, blahblahblah? to help our lives. who made them? various people from various different times in history.

although i love humanities, psychology, etc. courses, the idea that we could put a “purpose” on something as large as life is ridiculous and one of the flaws of the human mind. life just happened, the way cosmic events just happen; by chance, by luck, whatever you call it. it happened without a purpose, and that’s what i think. i think we have absolutely no purpose in life, but it’s funny to watch great thinkers attempt to conjure a solution to this.

but you know what has a great purpose? peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

There is no purpose. We are here by random.

However, Yoursky’s peanut butter and jelly sandwiches is correct. They have a great purpose.

If you want a purpose, pick one. Mathematicians call that a [Choice Function](Choice function - Wikipedia).

The purpose of life is to find out whether there is a purpose to life.

Truthfully, I don’t think that there is a great big ‘blanket’ purpose to life, but that we’re supposed to make our own. There’s this quote by Alexandre Dumas-“The soul makes its own horizons.” which is basically what I mean. You determine what the purpose of your life is and carry it out. Even if it’s something as simple as being successful.

I think a lot of people try to find purpose to life because other wise there would be no reason for doing anything. Living just to be alive seems almost like a waste of time. So people give themselves reason and purpose and goals for being here and it occupies time.

I don’t feel that I have a purpose in relation to anyone else, but you never know.

Wow! None of you guys find that there is meaning or purpose in life? That’s an interesting viewpoint. What do you think we are here for? We just randomly were put here for no reason at all and our lives are meaningless? Haha, I disagree, but I suppose everyone is entitled to his/her own opinions:> I also believe religion may play a factor as well.

I’ve contemplated long about this issue - and I could ramble practically forever on it. But I’m going refrain for doing that.

I don’t view life as some enigma that needs to be solved by finding a definite purpose or meaning to it.The origin of life could be traced back so far in history, it’s incredible how far we have come. If there was a universal purpose, the universe would have told us by now. I don’t know why people try conceptualizing things such as the purpose of life, religion, God, etc. I feel like by doing so and trying to process things within our rational thoughts and perceptual limitations, we’re doing a lot of …de-evolving. With that said, everyone’s purpose is sort of esoteric and individual - it comes down to what you want to get out of your life. Or even if you plan on molding your life around a specific purpose(say, you want your children to have a more fruitful life). . The way I look at it is: we are to experience, not think, and make the most of those experiences. We use thinking as tool to help us achieve those experiences. That’s my purpose - to experience life and accept it on life’s terms.

I don’t try answering such questions (as much as I love rationalize everything lol). I just try to live within the best of my abilities and find my own happiness.

Wow - I feel crappy about my answer (just really tired).

life=no purpose

I liked the Shakespeare quote above by the way.

Life has no purpose. Make of it what you will.

I disagree, each people have a different opinion thus a different purpose of life. We do have a choice on whether to make our life as a survival game(you breath, you eat, you sleep - if not, you’ll die) or make it useful to the society(find a cure for cancer?)

Though, it’s true that sometimes I wonder myself - why the hell am I here? We all know that we are born, in terms of biology, randomly. But after all, the more we encounter life, the more we are starting to figure out what purpose of our life is.

Good pose though :)

Purpose of human life = advancing human species. Usually, this means procreating and raising those children, but if you can invent or find something that means humans don’t die, you’ve fulfilled it.
It’s the purpose of the existence of each member of every species. Our higher sentience level and our ability to call it a purpose and to search for a “greater” one (what’s greater than advancing the species?) doesn’t make us any different. Prevent human extinction, maybe even make human existence better, and you’ve done your job.

To be honest, if I had a life without purpose i would go crazy…What the hell are we here for then??? It is to prolong the human race and do everything we can as humans to make this world better for us and other people. It is to find our passions and then try to change the world bit by bit. Or, it can be to just live a normal life trying to strive for the greastest life. Ultimately, we will all die. It is out of our control. Maybe not tommorow, but maybe in 10, 20, 50 years. Thus, we are put here for a reason. To get the most out of it and then take the rewards to achieve heaven (from a relgious pov).

If you want a purpose, and you’re waiting for someone to hand you one, I have something in mind. Serve me. Otherwise, just pick one.
