So I'm a junior and I'll probably get a C or B in Spanish 2. My teacher last year for Spanish 1 did not do a good job at teaching spanish. Now, I'm struggling to pull a B. My gpa is pretty low too and I NEED to get straight As this year. Should I purposely fail spanish and retake it for an A during summer? how will that look on my transcript?

Um…You’ll take a huge hit to your GPA from the F, and if your school doesn’t have grade replacement/you don’t get an A, that’ll be worse than getting a B or a C. This doesn’t sound like a good plan to me.

Oh, my school does have a grade replacement. I just want to know how that’ll look.

Aren’t you only six weeks into the semester? If you have gaps from last year’s class, THIS is the time to fill them, not next summer.

@siliconvalleymom Yes, I am only 6 week into the semester. However, I completely bombed the test I took today. I studied for the entire day before the test and when I took it, it was beyond what I could do. My teacher last year had very little listening and oral implemented in his curriculum so for the test today, I missed almost all the questions related to that. Coupled with eveything else, I will probably get a 65-70%, which will destroy my mid B. I might be able to pull an A but the chances are very slim, especially since this test was very big.

Do you have to fail it to retake it? Seems extreme.

Too late to drop the class?

@cortana yes
@RunsWscissors well, its either that or a C+ or B

Just exactly how many times have you met with your current teacher in order to discuss your difficulties with this class? That is where you should start. Deliberately choosing to fail a class is a very risky choice. If you were my kid, you would be grounded in a corner with the TV set to Telemundo for a month just for suggesting this.

^ +1 to happymomof1. Love the Telemundo idea.

This sounds like a typical case of adolescent overreaction.

Yes, your present grade will be lower than you would like. A reasonable response to this situation is to work as hard as possible to raise the grade.

The OP stated that “I NEED to get straight As this year”. What happens when you get a low test score in another class? Will you intentionally fail that class as well? Your summer is going to be awfully busy.

Learn from your mistakes. Don’t compound one error by making another. Understand that you cannot solve every problem immediately. Hard work is its own reward regardless of the situation.

Even if you school has grade replacement, will that erase the first instance on your transcript? GPA is great, but if you fail it now, and retake it over the summer, and both show on your transcript, that will raise red flags. If you want to take it over the summer, perhaps you should see if you can audit the class this year first, rather then intentionally failing, or maybe you can sit in on another Spanish 1 class.

Have you spoken to the teacher? If others in your class had the same teacher last year, they are likely to be in the same boat as you, and the current teacher may need to adjust his curriculum to bring you all up to speed.
