The selective admission rate at Tulane is probably due somewhat to the free application. I don’t think they’re out to ruin your life. Also, my SAT’s were a 1200 so again, that goes against that reasoning. They look at everything.

^^^ Perhaps. Hard to tell and I’m not interested enough to do any real digging. I don’t have a dog in this race one way or the other. I just came across a couple of other rants which brought me over to this thread. I guess everyone will see how it all washes out in the long run. Good luck to everyone!

A very large number of deferals are ultimately accepted at the regular decision process.
EA accepts are apparently for very strong applicants ,even though many of those applicants may be using Villanova as a “safety” for schools like Gtown , ND or BC.

It is a curious strategy, but they ultimately end up with a very strong enrolled student body of 1600 every year.

I do believe they put a lot of value in essays and teacher recommendations.

Don’t take the deferals personally , if you think you are a strong applicant, chances are you will be admitted in late March.

Brave Ulysses, you mention teacher recommendations…I only sent my GC’s rec. (b/c i thought that was the only letter of rec. that Villanova wanted), were we supposed to send other teacher recommendations? I was deferred from Nova and I’m curious as to whether or not sending teacher recommendations to the university will help. Also, if I have a legacy & 2 alumni at Nova, do you think this could possibly help my chances during Nova’s RD process? Thanks!

I would not speculate about your chances without knowing your application strength or weakness(Gpa, class rigor, test scores , EC’s etc.).
But to answer your question , yes you were supposed to include a teacher recommendation.
I believe that strong teacher recommendations that address academic commitment will increase the chances of borderline admits.
Find a teacher that knows you well , in a core subject that you excelled in, that can write on your behalf.

Of course high stats will get you in Early Action, but Nova judges most applications on criteria above the GPA/SAT/ACT scale. For most students the EC’s ,and recs make the difference in borderline cases.
The adcoms are looking for students that will enroll , excel in the classroom ,be active on campus and will graduate. Is that you ?

Good luck!

jerseyT

S was accepted EA. He sent both GC and teacher recommendations. My opinion; teachers know students better than GCs. If you can get a good recommendation, it may help you in RD. Good luck.

Thanks Brave Ulysses & davh01. Also, congrats to your S davh01!!

I had checked on Villanova’s website before I sent in all of my stuff, before EA at the end of September, and I could have sworn their website said to only send the GC rec. and I was kind of upset about it b/c 2 of my teachers rec.'s were GREAT and really expressed the person I am. Maybe I’ll send in those 2 before the RD decision deadline. Also, Brave Ulysses, I think I’m a pretty well-rounded person. I feel as if I may have everything Villanova wants, but I know my SATs are slacking significantly, but I do have many other assets.

Does anyone know if getting deferred lowers your chance at good need-based financial aid?

that’s what i was thinking jerseyT… i know many of my friends were accepted and did not have the greatest stats. the only reason i can come up with is based on the school we applied to. if anyone has any other possibilities i’d appreciated it

yeah, since it’s their hardest school. where else are you applying? and is nova your first choice?

i’m applying to bc, ud, bu, northeastern, fordham, carnegie mellon, and nova. bc is my top choice so in a perfect world i’d go there, but i just got deferred from there and financially it would be insansely difficult to manage. i live in delaware so trying to get accepted to their honors program and enrolling there makes the most sense. villanova, though, would be great to get accepted to and since business is so good there, it would make my decision really difficult : / how about yourself?

yeah i definitely see where you’re coming from. i applied to nova, drexel, and st. joes. i got deferred from nova like you, but accepted in drexel’s lebow school of business and st. joe’s haub business school, but yeah, since the business is so GREAT at nova, i dont know if i would wanna pass up the chance (if i get accepted). i was going to apply to delaware too! haha but im going to commute to wherever i go, so delaware was a little too far for me (about an hour)

DEFFEREDDD from business but am going to lehigh? what a joke. they lost out on a great pool of kids obviously i suggest do not even give them the time of day and just go to a school that actually wanted you. Obviously villanofun is not the right place in my opinion

cbsc: that’s a bit immature… have fun at lehigh, no wonder nova deferred you …
