So, the position I'm in is that I've been accepted to both Toronto and McGill and I cannot decided which I like better. The decision/deposit for McGill is technically due by 11:59 tonight. I'm freaking out, and have to go to work in an hour which means I have even less time.

I've been thinking about the decision all week and I haven't been able to decide. It is absolutely 50-50 for me.

Is it okay to put down a deposit? Do you think that makes me an a$$hole, since I could hypothetically deny another kid a spot? Will the college penalize me (besides the deposit being nonrefundable) if I don't go?

You will not being denying anybody a spot. If you do not decide to attend, the spot will be offered to another student who is in the waiting list. They calculate an expected yield before hand and you will definitely not be stealing anyone’s spot, although you will be wasting some money.

Don’t go crazy. Just don’t pay the deposit. As you mentioned , they don’t refund you. Accept Toronto’s offer, trust me. I went through your exact situation and you will not regret your decision.
And of course you will be denying another kids’ spot if you accept their offer.
Keep us up to date on what you decide to do. If you need any help regarding Toronto, I will gladly help you, just reply here and I will send you my email by PM.
Good luck

Wait, do they? That wouldn’t make sense for those that are waitlisted and have to deposit in one place whilst awaiting another college’s decision.

They can’t FORCE you to go if you pay the deposit because for many people circumstances change: loss of finances, accepted from waitlist in another institution, visa processing…etc. I’m pretty sure all they do is keep your deposit.

NO, fjaril, that’s not true. you can double deposit and then withdraw from one school later. you will waste some money, true, but no legal action will be taken against you.

I agree that you can double deposit. How would the other school know that you had also deposited elsewhere? They wouldn’t. You aren’t the first person to do this, I’m sure.
