The Harvard Crimson :: News :: College Aces Putnam Again

The results of the 2007 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition have been announced. The Putnam competition is widely considered the most prestigious math competition for college undergraduates in the U.S. and Canada and is administered out of the Department of Mathematics at Harvard which houses the offices of the Mathematical Association of America. Teams from over four hundred universities competed this year. The members of each team take the exam individually and the combination of their rankings determines the rankings for their teams.

This year, Harvard took first place, bumping Princeton back to second. Princetons team won the competition last year, but Harvard has far more first place team finishes than any other school. The top five teams are singled out for honors.

Individuals are also ranked and the top five finishers (six, in case of a tie) are named individual Putnam Fellows. This year, of the six Putnam fellows, two were from MIT, two from CalTech and one each from Princeton and Harvard.

Princetons Putnam Fellow this year is senior Aaron Pixton 08 who was also named a fellow in 2004 and 2005. Aaron also won a Churchill Scholarship this year and will be continuing his studies at Cambridge University next year.

Congratulations to all!
