Well.. I got accepted to two colleges already, but I sent an application to a prestigious private school 3 days ago, and of course their answer will take time, if I got accepted which is not certain; I won't know until the end of the month
and deadline to register to any of my 2 colleges is by December the 1st

Can I put a deposit on one of my colleges and if I got accepted in the private school, send a letter to the admission saying I won't be joining them?
or this is illegal?

I know that you can't put two deposits at the same time, but I don't know if I could put deposit then change my mind?

The GMU December 1 deadline is to accept spring admission, from what I can tell. Are you applying for spring admission? Or next fall. Definitely double check because I don’t know of any college that requires a deposit by December 1st for enrollment the following fall as a freshman. Even those schools who have accepted students early decision do not require an early deposit. But yes, you should never place two deposits down - but if you place a deposit down and then change your mind, as long as you are willing to lose that deposit, then you would call the school to withdraw your acceptance and forfeit the deposit.

You are a transfer student? You can submit your deposit to GMU and later inform them you will not enroll, if you get accepted by another university you prefer. But the deposit is non-refundable after 12/1, so you would lose that money.
