Let's say I am applying to Law School in the Fall 2010. MY tentative plan is to take and LSAT prep course in the spring/summer and taking the LSAT in October. When do you all recommend contacting professors for letters of recommendations? LSAC's website suggest 6 weeks prior to applying, but I feel this is pretty short notice. Any thoughts?

Anyone have an opinion?

Immediately after completing the class. Give them the option of writing the letter then and holding on to it (most professors will say this is a good idea) or actually writing it closer to the deadline (most professors will actually do this). Then remind them again about four months before, and finally ask them the final time about two months before. In all cases, keep the "ask-for" date constant: about one month before you're sending in your apps. (Usually August 1.)

How did I know you would respond BDM! Thanks. So to clarify I would ask my professor to write it after class and have the professor keep the letter until I ask for it in Aug.

I took a business writing class where they stressed to keep it simple and direct when asking for a letter, because if you make your request complex or ambiguous then the professor is less likely to write one.

When did you actually register with LSDAS? When you registered for the Lsat?

I don't really remember. I didn't go straight from undergrad, so there was no point waiting -- since my transcript wasn't going to change at all. So it might well have been way, way in advance.
