Putting work on college application

If I work for my parents, and they own a private business, how would colleges know how much I worked. I mean, I could totally be not honest and they wouldn't know, corect?

For example, let's say only in the summer I work about 25 hours a week, what will prevent me from saying I work 40 hours a week, and 20 hours a week during the school year?

Your conscience and sense of personal integrity, maybe?

so really there is no way to know if I actually did something.. how do they know I even did anything at all? How do they know if I'm being honest about anything that's school related?

Well, if you were paid for that work, and you worked that much, I would assume you have to pay income taxes. All that info goes to the schools.

If you weren't paid, then it's volunteer work.

Simple!

What if you worked off the books?

I believe if you admit tax fraud to prospective colleges, it is not a plus ...

There are a couple punch lines to this ... one test of your integrity is what you do when noone is looking; and to a degree that is the case here ... and second, if you are caught the school could reject you immediately, or kick you out of school if you are an admitted student when they find out, or rescind your degree if you have graduated when they find out ... pretty high risk move in my opinion.

If you lie a little bit and tweak some things it's highly unlikely that it would make any difference in your application ... so even though it's unlikely that you would get caught I'm not sure why anyone would take that risk.

If you lie enough to make a difference in your chances the lie will have to be consistent throughout your application package ... application, essays, guidence conselor input, recommendations ... that's a pretty tough thing to do especially when you don't control all that content ... what if one of the recommendations compliments you for doing so well academically while working part-time for your parents?

I work for my parents and receive no pay.. so I'm guessing this is still not considered volunteer service. Although what I'm saying is that technically it is not possible to get caught if let's say I say I work 15 or 20 hours a week istead of saying I work my 7 hours a week on a typical schoolweek.

I am in the same sitaution as you, but i kept it honest and said the hours i worked honestly. For you i guess it all depends on what school you are applying to and whether or not you are willing to test your integrity,
