Puzzling Writing Section Question

Hey guys,

I just finished a test in the Barrons SAT prep book, and I got this one problem wrong in the multiple choice section that I am having a hard time understanding. Here's the question:

A(Was) B(it) C(they) who were involved in the recent D(unruly) demonstration? E(No error)

I chose A because I thought that the sentence had to make sense even when the orders were switched around meaning it would have to be 'they were it' not 'they was it'

Can someone explain this to me please?? (btw, the book says the answer is E, no error)

Thanks for the help guys!

The “was” refers to “it” in which case, those two are correct. I was a bit hung up on C myself haha. “They” sounds awkward but I suppose there’s no better substitution.

thanks n0vad3m0n!
