<p>All it's saying is that:</p>
<p>2x-5 < x+1 < 3x-8</p>
<p>Because x+1 is the median, it must be the number in the middle. It's probably easiest to just plug in numbers.</p>
<p>(A) 2(5) - 5 < 5 + 1 < 3(5) - 8 = 5<6<7
(B) 2(7) - 5 < 7 + 1 < 3(7) - 8 = 9<8<13
(C) etc... = 13<10<19</p>

<p>So it's pretty clear that A is the answer.</p>

<p>Another way to tackle this problem:</p>
<p>2x-5 < x+1 simplifies to x < 6
x+1 < 3x-8 simplifies to 2x > 9 or x > 4.5</p>
<p>If x < 6, x > 4.5 and x is an integer, then x=5 is the answer.</p>
