Do I have a choice in choosing a single room?
Or do they just randomly choose for us?

If we do have a choice then is it really competitive to get a single room?

You get to select whether you prefer a single on your housing application. It's not guaranteed if you select it, but I haven't heard anyone complain about not getting their choice.

I don't think singles are that competitive. You'd be surprised how many people choose doubles.

i chose a double and got a single and i'm loving it.

so single is better then doubles??
how about the price difference?? do you pay that even though you didn't request a single??

is the single room the same size as double? that'd be awesome

singles are a little more expensive, ...you can find this out looking at the cornell website somewhere.
some singles in balch or dickson are as big as doubles in other dorms.

yes rach, you do have to pay the difference. Unless you know that you're a really sociable person and won't have trouble making friends, I'd suggest getting a double.

Roommates aren't instant friends.... Some are, and I at least got along with mine for a few months. But, by February, I kinda really wanted a single. (How do you have sex with someone if your roommate pops in every twenty minutes?! Grh. Um, "private time" is more awkward, you can't listen to music or watch a movie nearly as freely, you have to compromise on lighting and window openness and where you put your shoes.... But, yeah, singles are a few hundred dollars more expensive.)

I met one friend through my roommate, and the rest I met in classes or extracurricular activities. All I was really hoping from him was that I'd have someone to eat with the first week or so, but he didn't. =(

(Unless you're sure you want roommates or don't want to fork over the extra money, I'd get a single. You'll appreciate it in the long run.)

I suggest getting a single. People worry about not being able to be in a "social environment", but thats not the case. For the most part, all the North Campus dorms are very social (ex. Mary Donlon), and in some dorms, the majority are singles (ex. Dickson) and yet they are still social. You will find friends no matter where you are. I definitely miss having privacy, so just to warn those who want doubles, don't expect to have much privacy.

According the the housing presentation thing I went to (I visited yesterday), they said that in the past, people who request singles get them, and even some people who request doubles end up with singles. There is a price difference though.

I hope I get a single. I REALLY hope I get a singlleee. TOo many crazy ppl in the world.

wow I thought singles were really hard to get..from what I've heard from some other colleges.

If you request a double and get a single, then you still pay the price for a double. If you request a single there is a high chance you'll end up in either Dickson or Balch where you'll be sort of segregated in Dickson because the guys live at one end and the girls at the other. And Balch is self-explanatory. If you get really lucky you could get a single in mews or court-kay-bauer.

"If you request a double and get a single, then you still pay the price for a double."

oh wowowowow...id be really lucky if that happened to me
i dont think ill get that lucky..luck is never on my side..thats why instead of hoping to be picked to live in court-kay-bauer or mews, im jus gonna choose a double in balch (yes i know a single is really big at balch but my mind is set)
i dont really trust luck..
