Q: Academic Suspension and Graduate School

Seriously need help!
I was suspended for one semester from college. I am now studying at another university (not CC) this semester. Next semester, I plan to go back to the previous one where I stayed for three semesters.

I have two questions:

1) What if my return is denied? My grades this semester in the new school won't be very high, probably several Bs and Cs but I do make progress because I got Cs, Ds and Fs before. I think going back is crucial to my future.

2) If I go back successfully, I am going to retake several courses. However, my final GPA won't be above 3.5 no matter how hard I try. Can I go into a good graduate school with a low GPA and a suspension record on transcript? Will they look at my gpa in a different way regarding my suspension?

I am an international student, Asian.
I'll provide more information if needed.

Thank you!

Well, a lot depends on how competitive your field is and what sort of school you want to get in to.There seem to be programs for just about anyone in any situation, though I wouldn’t consider them all good options. Still, if you’re willing to join a program that is not very selective, and if you’re willing to pay for your education (you’ll probably need a master’s), then you should be able to find something.

It sounds like the university you are in right now is more appropriate for you at this point. Your grades are better there (B & C instead of C, D & F). Have you considered staying in your current school and trying to improve your grades so you can be getting A’s & B’s by the time you graduate? Better grades from a less prestigious university are probably better than mediocre or poor grades from a more “elite” school.

You have not mentioned what field you are studying and so I can’t sa more about graduate school, but when I evaluate graduate applicants to the physics program at [Illinois Institute of Technology](http://www.iit.edu), I definitely take into account if the student has shown improvement in the last few semesters.

Thanks for the replies. I major in cognitive neuroscience.

Hmm . . . that could be a tough one. It seems to be a very competitive field right now. All you can do, however, is put the past behind you and focus on doing well from this point on. xraymancs gave you good advice about showing improvement.Try to figure out what helps you do better in your classes. If you are able to do well in your advanced classes, lower grades in earlier classes should not carry as much weight.

Thank you, eg1.
