Qns on Course Registration

Hi All,

I am an incoming freshmen to the SEAS. I have just logged on to Penn InTouch to register for my classes, but the status says “Request” after I have added the courses. Is that normal for freshman? Will I be ensured a place in that course? If not, what will happen?

As I am looking at doing a double degree (BAS (CS) and Econ(Finance)) and accelerate them, tight course planning and summer school is essential. So I’ll really appreicate some advice regarding my current course selection.

My A-Level gives credits for:

 • MATH104
 • PHYS 093, 094, 050, 051
 • Waiver for ECON001, 002

I proposed to take the following:

 • CSE 120/130 PROG LANG & TECH I (Studying for placement exam now)
 • CSE 240 INTRO TO COMP ARCH
 • STAT 101 INTRO BUSINESS STAT
 • ACCT 101 PRINCIPLES OF ACCOUNTING
 • FNCE 100 CORPORATE FINANCE

That’s 5.5 CU. If I pass the departmental exam for CSE120/130, I will opt for, in order of preference, CSE140/OPIM101/FNCE101/MATH114.

The problem I have is that most of the CSE classes are not accessible as they require CSE121 (which only available in spring) and CSE260 (only in spring). Personally I have very strong programming background, but there is no way for me to register for these classes until next fall (when I complete my 121 and 260 next spring).

So I have decided to take on more core requirements of my second proposed degree, Econ (Finance), although I am not yet a Wharton student (which I will be, eventually).

So the problem is that is it hard to get a place for these non-typical freshmen classes, as I have most of my “basic courses” covered?

As you can see, a lot of the classes are from Wharton, is it difficult (or impossible) for SEAS student to register for classes at Wharton? If not, are there any special procedures involved?

Thanks in advance for all your replies. Any other ways that I can optimise my current schedule will be greatly appreicated.

for one, registering now is pointless as a freshman cause you are on "freshman hold" until you submit your survey online and have a meeting with your pre-major advisor during the advance registration period i think from june 26 to july 31...im not sure about july 31 this is just off the top of my head.

oh... may I know what survey is that?

and when (or how) should i find how who is my pre-major advisor? thanks.

First, you are probably not on registration hold. If you are able to request courses, then you are probably not on registration hold. You only need to do what cdeitz mentions if you're a College student (at least I didn't have to meet with my advisor before registering last year, and I'm a SEAS student).

Now, don't worry about the 'request' thing. That is normal, because Advanced Registration is precisely that, i.e. you request a course and then later you will find out if you got it (it is a random process, like a raffle). If you didn't get into one ore more courses, then you will be able to register later during the regular registration period.

Now, about your proposed courses. First of all, you need to consider that you are not yet a Wharton student. To get into Wharton as a Dual Degree student, you will need to apply and have a pretty high GPA (around 3.7). So, you may want to reconsider your choice of subjects for that reason -- if you don't get into Wharton, then STAT, ACCT, and FNCE may be like a 'waste' later on. Secondly, Wharton students themselves don't regularly take ACCT and FNCE on their first year, so this may put you at a disadvantage. Other than that, any engineering student can take courses at Wharton, so there shouldn't be a problem.

You have a lot of credit, and you are correct in that CSE121 and CSE260 aren't offered until the Spring. But there are still a lot of other requirements you can satisfy on your freshman year, with no need to take the Wharton core courses. All engineering students need to take a writing seminar, so you may want to get rid of that requirement on your first year. Also, you may want to take MATH114 (which I also think it's required for a BAS in CS), or another natural science course (chem or bio).

I hope this is helpful.

thanks rudess.

I was told that I cannot take STAT101/102 as an engineering student but I can take STAT430/431. Does the higher level STAT courses satisfy the Wharton core requirement STAT101/102? Or I have to take all STAT101/102/430/431 which is a bit silly.

cdeitz60:
I found my "Fall 2006 EAS Advisors" when I log in to Penn Portal today. Is she the Pre-major Academic Advisor?

STAT 430/431 should indeed satisfy the Wharton STAT 101/102 requirement. See

for more info.

Thanks rudess. You are really fast.

Btw, is there a general forum for penn students? Or it is not yet opened?

no you are on registration hold you can still "request" classes but nothing will happen to the status it'll just say requesting. did you get the packet in the mail telling you about the survey you have to fill out and info about your pre major advisor. cause trust me, it's all in there. but yeah i am a college student so i dont know what you have to do for wharton/seas/etc
