Hi, I want to go to OHSU for either medical and dental school and I was wondering what I could do to enhance my chances of getting in (ie what gpa, and mcat/dat would I need). Also, even if I go OOS for undergrad would I still get the instate "favoritism" that many people that go to Oregon State and University of Oregon get since I've lived in Oregon, and Portland especially, for my whole life? Or should I just go to an instate instituion such as Reed and apply to OHSU? Also can anyone comment on how much of a factor state rescidency is for OHSU?

You'll still get the instate bump even if you go to a school outside of Oregon, as long as you're an Oregon resident. One thing to think about: if you apply from instate, you have a 19% chance of getting in. If you apply from out of state, you have a 1% chance of getting in. (68 accepted out of 356, and 44 accepted out of 3181 respectively)

Have you seen the MSAR book? It lists the average MCAT and Selection factors for each medical school. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1577540492/sr=8-1/qid=1155073007/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-9184152-9232937?ie=UTF8)

For example, OHSU's average MCAT scores for selected applicants (32) is above the national average (~31) for those accepted into medical school.

The average GPA for a matriculant is 3.73 with the average science/math GPA being a 3.69.

Of those that matriculated to OHSU last year, 74% did community service/ volunteer work, 88% did medically-related work, and 79% did research.

OHSU loves the same things that every other medical school loves in applicants: a good reason why you're interested in medicine, and some medically related experiences to back it up. Volunteering at a hospital is common; being an EMT will make you stand out. Doing research is slightly less common; getting research PUBLISHED in a scientific journal will help you stand out. Job shadowing is helpful; Job shadowing for an extended period of time will help you stand out....etc.

And, of course, you should complement them on the awesome tram they're building, lol.

Hope that helped.
